The Sarum rite

I was interested to learn recently of the Sarum rite (or “use”). As an Aussie with strong sympathy for all things british, this fascinates me. Could anyone tell me why it disappeared, if it is still practised anywhere, etc? Or direct me to a good book about it? I just find it fascinating - especially the fact that it was one of the few “rites” permitted to be used after Trent, largely out of respect to the persecuted English who used it.

In the oldest MS missals of the SR, not only the Kyries, but the Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei were frequently troped on feasts.

It basically was/is a local usage of the Roman rite. The chalice was prepared during the Gradual at High Mass. The priest’s prayer before Communion began, “Hail forever more, most precious Body (or Blood) of Christ…”

If you go to the site of the Monastery of the Merciful Savior (which link I can’t find), you can d/l both an English and Latin version of it–as well as other goodies.

I think it is still celebrated in some Catholic parishes where the Anglican congregation left the Anglican church to join the Catholic Church. I have heard these parishes called “Anglican-use” parishes. I once visited a website of one of these parishes, but I don’t remember the name of the parish. The site had the words of the Liturgy on it. It might be found in a Google search.

Anglican Use is different than the Sarum Rite- the Anglican Use is basically the traditional Anglican liturgy; it has similarities to the Novus Ordo and the Tridentine Mass, and it’s in Elizabethan English. A beautiful liturgy in its own “rite” (Sorry, couldn’t resist)

Actually, it was not permitted after Trent insofar as the Mass in England was suppressed during the Reformation, and was celebrated only in secret. When the Catholic faith was permitted again in 1829 and the hierarchy restored a few years later, there was no Sarum rite.

Some Anglicans profess a love for it and occasionally use some of its forms in English, but in fact, the Sarum Use had been a Roman form and thus was only in Latin.
