How exactly is the Scapular worn? Is it common for laymen to wear the Scapular? What are the biggest benefits to wearing a Scapular?

I wear the brown scapular. Mine is wool and I wear it under my clothing. Search the spirituality forum - or here - for lots of great threads on the various scapular devotions.

The link below has a great explanation of scapulars, the different ones, how they are worn, etc. Yes, laymen wear one, any Catholic can (should!) wear one 🙂

They also have a link to where you can get a free scapular if you would like.

I wear the Brown Scapular. It is two patches of brown wool connected by two strings. I have an image of St. Michael the Archangel on one of the two, and an image of the “conquer by this” image. There is also a crucifix hanging on the string along with a St. Benedict medal.

One of the patches goes behind my neck, the other hangs down the front. I group the crucifix/medal with the front patch.

I wear it at all times. (I have a second one that I’ll trade out for showers.)

I think it is not common for laymen to wear it (because people don’t really know about it, in my opinion). Also, people have to be careful to emphasize that it is NOT some kind of magical help. Our Lady made a promise, and if worn with a purity of purpose, then it will be as good as her word.

For me, the benefit is a closer relationship with Christ. I am seeing my own sinfulness far more frequently - and I’m catching it closer to the point of inception. Also, I see a spill-over effect where others in my family are also seeing the joy that comes with a deeper commitment to Christ, and they are starting to move with me in that direction.

A natural death for me should be a few decades away, but I’m fairly certain that I’ll die with it around my neck.

NOTE: Please be sure to have a priest (or deacon) enroll you in the order. Please do not just wear a brown scapular without your enrollment - in my opinion, it becomes meaningless without enrollment.
