I am in RCIA right now and they gave us a syllabus and I saw that in a few weeks we’ll be focusing on the scrutinies. Can someone explain a little about them?

I am getting pretty excited it has been 11 weeks since RCIA has started and I have enjoyed going to the classes. I have not gone to mass yet, I know I’m suppose to go but I never got into the habit of going to church on Sunday morning and I tried to get friends to go with me so I wont be alone the first few times but they always make up an excuse as to why they can’t go. I know I should go anyways and I am going to start going this Sunday.

but I want to give thanks for your courage to take part in the RCIA in moving towards our Catholic faith…

and I wish to ask our God to give you the courage and grace to go to Mass whether or not anyone accompanies you. I ask Jesus Himself to be your companion as you go to Mass.

Even though it’s scary to do things alone the first time, below is my way of saying you can’t be alone at Mass. I share it so maybe you get the feel of it in some sense…Trishie

God’s gift of redemption and Jesus’ heart-gift

Jesus, although we are often complacent regarding this gift of Your highest creative imagination, the Eucharist is Your heart-gift to humanity throughout time. You grant it for our spiritual nourishment and for our intimate communion with God, with Christians throughout the ages, and with all saints in Heaven.

You offer Yourself to God in reparation, thanksgiving, petition and praise on behalf of everyone who ever lives. I ask You, with the Holy Spirit, with the intercession of Your Mother, of all saints and angels, and of all souls, to offer the Mass for all persons in the highest way intended by God.

Thank You Jesus for this gift of Eucharist that is offered for everyone, even those who know nothing of this gift! The Eucharistic offering is never an isolated event or the prayer of any one person, but of all people. Therefore, in the Eucharist, I say ‘Amen’ to all Your hopes and dreams for everyone and everything that You intend in time and eternity.

The Mass is the only banquet to which one may invite countless souls from around the world throughout time. I invite the Angels of dear ones and of each other person living and in Purgatory, to share fully in the Eucharist as they proclaim ‘Amen’ to all the hopes and dreams that God has for each of these souls.

I wish my life to be a celebration of this heart-gift of Jesus who loves us each so much. For Jesus, Bread of Life, You are my pearl beyond price. I offer this pearl to the Father for each soul entrusted to me, and for all persons.

The Scrutinies take place during the season of Lent, a few months from now, not not a few weeks. Only those who are the Elect (un-Baptized) after the Rite of Election participate in them.
 
I know its during lent season the only reason I said a few weeks is because our classes go by weeks and its only 9 classes away. Thank you for all the advice. 🙂 I will be getting baptized so I was just wondering if the church would be able to tell the priest that I shouldn’t become Catholic. I read somewhere that you are in front of the whole parish during these events. Does it just very between parish to parish? Can anyone explain what their experience was like?
 
Dear, don’t worry so much, I think people know that God leads as as we can not as we can’t. Do try to have the courage to go to Mass on Sunday. Imagine that Br Rich is on one side of you and I’m on the other…since we two have given you our love and support. We’ll be thinking of you and praying for you.

And when you’re in front of everyone, imagine that he and I are smiling up at you. I don’t know about Brother, but I’ve a warm smile! You’ll be okay.

No, it’s nothing like that. It’s some special prayers that are said for the people who are getting ready to be baptized.
I read somewhere that you are in front of the whole parish during these events.

Yes, this is so that they can pray along with the priest, the special prayers that he is saying for you at this time. 🙂

The persons who determine if you are ready to be Baptized and are living as a Catholic is you, your sponsor, the RCIA team and your Pastor. With us every member of the RCIA team signed a letter listing the names of those to be Baptized or Received, and sent it to the Pastor each year before the Easter Vigil or when others were to be received at another time.
 
I just wanted to say thanks for the support 🙂 I went to mass this morning and loved it.
 
I also go to Mass alone (husband is not at all interested). On those Sundays I feel especially lonely, I sit close to the tabernacle and Jesus keeps me company 👍 It works!

According to the RCIA study guide, the catechumenate period is to be “an extended period during which the candidates are given sutiable pastoral formation and guidance, aimed at training them in the Christian life” (RCIA 75). Liturgy and worship are essential to the Catholic way of life. In most parishes with RCIA, the catechumens (the unbaptised) are dismissed after the first part of the Mass, after hearing the Word of God (scripture readings and homily), to reflect on what they have heard. If you’re not attending Mass, you’re not allowing yourself to learn what a significant part of being Catholic is. Have you shared what you’ve posted on this forum with your RCIA leader or sponsor? Perhaps you can attend Mass with one of them.
