What I don’t understand is how any group or person, who strays from the Church that Christ established for us all, can say that another group is not Christian because they have strayed more?!?!

God oftens brings goodness out of evil.

I have many problems with Adventist doctrine. But that does not mean Jesus cannot use non-Catholic Christians to do good. Even though Adventists only have “part of the good news” we can still see Jesus in many Adventists. Adventists have a deep love for the Lord, and this is seen through their charitable works.

I know the LDS Church and SDA Church often use charity as a evangelical tool, but that does not detract from all of the good that comes out of their charitable works. I believe Adventists` good works are sincere and genuine.

One thing I admire about Adventists is their missionary work abroad. Even though I strongly disagree with their “message,” I admire their dedication and selflessness when it comes to missionary work. There are many Catholic missionaries hard at work overseas as well. Both groups serve as an example to myself to follow through on Jesus`s commandment to spread the Gospel.

Sincerely,

Maria1212

The Branch Davidians began in 1929, and through the list of their successive leaders they were further and further removed from Christianity and Adventism. By the time of David Koresh, and the incident at Waco, the Branch Davidians had VERY VERY LITTLE in common with Adventism.

Like I said, it is as ridiculous to blame Adventism’s doctrines or system for the Branch Davidians as it is to blame Catholicism for the Cathars.

The responsiblity for the sect lies squarely on the shoulders of those who chose to live and advocate that religion, no one else.
This is actually well said. For an official statement on Branch Dividians you may want to also view this article.

FWIW, when an SDA becomes Orthodox, s/he is ALWAYS received by baptism, and NOT by Chrismation.

can the Seventh Day Adventists be considered christians? I know that they have some very far out beliefs such as the denial of eternal hell and immortal souls (they say that the catholic church invented these teachings). They also believe that jesus appeared to their prophet ellen white, similar of how the mormons have a prophet. Do SDA believe in the trinity? I have talked to some who do but i have heard of others who do not. I even have heard some who claim that jesus is michael the archangel (similar to jehovah’s witnesses). Some people consider the SDA to be a cult like the mormons and the Jehovah’s Witness because of their unique doctrines and beliefs, what should we make of them?
It depends on what your definitions of cult, christian are.

There are SDA sects today that are arian which deny the trinity.

Mainline SDA believe in the trinity, and interresting enough accept the concept of development of doctrine within their sect.

Concerning the solas, they tend to misdefine those and go overboard.

They reject many christian doctrines like Hell, eternal punishment, etc.,

They like most protestants reject many catholic distinctives.

the Seventh Day Adventist are christians because they accept the trinity. Although the Seventh-Day Adventist really make an effort to be considered apart of mainstream protestanism, their teachings on the sabbath, soul-sleep, hell and among other beliefs makes them very unpopular among other Protestant Religions.

…"the truth that the Branch Davidians are rooted in Adventism.
Your comments are similar to me saying something like: “Catholic Priests who rape children do so because of Catholic theology.”

Whether Catholic, or Adventist; nothing could be further from the truth. No decent human being would ever give credence to such suicidal butchery; or child abuse; nor would the Adventist or Catholic Church.

The reason Koresh went the way he did was precisely the opposite of what you are spouting off about here. He strayed from Adventist teachings; he was disfellowshipped well before he did his final, and disgusting work. And he certainly had nothing to do with Adventists when he went on his killing spree in the name of religion.

See the link in post #21 for an official statement on Branch Davidians.

Adventist actually are Christians, whether you like it or not.

They are NOT Christian. They worship a false prophetess named Ellen G. White, who spread lies about the Catholic Church.

IMO, they aren’t. They believe Archangel Michael is Jesus. That’s not true.

The Catholic Church officially accepts the Adventist as Christians. Their baptism into Christianity is also accepted by the Catholic Church. So, if you are Catholic you should accept Adventists as Christians.

I highly doubt the Church would have accepted Adventism before it embraced modernism.

Totally false. The Catholic Church accepts Adventism because their belief in the Trinity is the same as ours. It has nothing to to with Modernism.

Well; for what it’s worth; I wish to humbly apologize for the fact that some have left you with such an impression.

Ellen White was a false prophetess and did write a lot of lies about the Catholic Church but Adventists are Christian because they believe in the trinity.

SDAs are christians even when some of their ideas are weird on our eyes. They might think the same of our practices except that many of them probably would not call us christians.
BTW the do not worship Ellen White more than we workship the Pope.

One thing that might be worth exploring in a topic like this is the fact that many seem to think that a “true” “Christian” is one that believes a certain set of doctrines, the way they are “suppposed to.” I mean; is it really limited to just what we believe, as we consider just what makes us Christian?

Some Protestants and Catholics never cease to amaze me when they see one thing that another group believes or does not believe; which they say makes them “non-Christians.” Some people who know little of doctrine are much nicer people than most Church people. I think we presume too much at times when we pronounce someone “not Christian” or “a Christian;” just based upon one or two things they believe or don’t believe.

I’m going to put in my two cents here and say “no.”

But I also want to say that I’m biased because my wife left me for for an SDA member.

They are filling my children’s heads with their nonsense and it seems every week I have to explain why its ok to eat shrimp or why its wrong to keep getting baptized whenever you feel like it, or why I’m not going to hell for worshiping on Sunday.

I’d like to know why the SDA men cut the hair on their temples when Leviticus plainly says not to. But then they turn around and tell my kids that if they eat pork they are unclean.

I think they put too much emphasis on the old testament instead of the teachings of Jesus. And that in my mind disqualifies them from being real Christians.

Yes, its my rant. But its my two cents.

hey my friend! I do need a hair cut right now - really bad. Work has been so busy it is holding me back!! But, you have just given me quite an idea!!

But seriously; my heart goes out to you re your wife. That would be a very difficult trial for you, I am sure. If a person dumps their spouse to live with/marry someone from another faith group - no matter what denomination; that is just plain wrong; it is not the way that the Bible would condone. I would be more tempted to blame that Adventist than your wife in this case.

I believe that you are entitled to your “rant” here; and I hope and pray that you choose to move above and beyond that cloud; and into the sunlight of Christ’s presence and joy. I really do!! 🙂

I think every SDA should study Thomas Aquinas, their teachings on the soul after death is something they lack truth in.

Every SDA should research the early Church Fathers, so they would have a better understanding of the sabbath/sunday topic, that way many of them will no longer have to limit their time of rest on just saturday.

To All

I am a little puzzled that Catholics would be divided on this question. It seems that there are two opposite opinions here as to whether or not Adventists are Christians?

What is the official Catholic teaching on this? What is the official Catholic teaching as to the minimum requirements for one to be a “Christian?”

In other words; what are the “essentials” that the Catholic Church says we should be “united” on?
