Hello I have been having an argument with someone about the second coming. When Jesus said only the father knows and not the Son. This didnt mean that Jesus didnt know in his divinity right. The person I am arguing about says that he chose not to know and still doesnt know. I said that cant be because him and the father are one. Thanks 👍
 
What Jesus meant was, “I was not sent to tell you when I will return.” This made explictly clear when He tells the curious Apostles in Acts 1 that it is not for them to know when the Kingdom will come.
 
You’re correct. Could you provide the verse where Jesus said he didn’t know? Possibly this was implied by your friend.
 
The answer is actually that he didnt know in his human nature but knew in his divinity. That is not to separate the two. He was true God and true man.

I too have always heard and been told, that Jesus doesn’t know when the end will come only his Father. So why do so many of us hear it this way and not the way you presented it?

We are obliged by Catholic teaching on the Nature of the Trinity to hold that the Father, Son, and Spirit all have the same knowledge. For they all have the same Nature, and in God knowledge is the same as existence, i.e. God’s knowledge is His Nature. So it is impossible for any one Person to know something that the other Persons do not know.

What Jesus meant was that His finite human mind did not know. Although Jesus was able to know anything in his human mind that he wished to know, he never wished to know anything inordinate, and it was not ordinate for his human mind, at that time, to know that fact.

{24:36} But concerning that day and hour, no one knows, not even the Angels of the heavens, but only the Father.

The Angels have the Beatific Vision of God, but they are finite (just as all creature are) and so even in the Beatific Vision they do not know all things.

Jesus says only the Father knows because all knowledge of the Son and the Spirit proceeds from the Father.
