I was wondering about something. In Missals that generally have side-by-side Latin and vernacular, why is the Secret never in Latin? Is it to really keep it a secret (pun intended)?

There should be. Which handmissal are you using?

A couple of them, in two languages (our parish is made up of americans and portuguese). None of the missals I consult has the Secret in Latin,

Thanks. I actually wasn’t looking for the Latin (as I’m the altar server, I try to keep my attention focused on the priest’s movements); I just wanted to know whether it was a general practice for the Latin to be ommited. Thanks anyway!

The name secret comes from the fact that it was read soto (inaudible) voice. Some Hand Missals list all the propers (Introit, Collect, Lesson, Gradual, Gospel, Offertory, Secret, Communion, Postcommunion) in vernacular only, otherwise either special paper should be used, or the book would be too thick.

Interesting. I thought they had all the Latin since mine does. I use the one by Baronius Press – baroniuspress.com/book.php?wid=56&bid=4
and the Secret is there.

However, I do wish the Latin type was larger and the English smaller; sometimes I’m peering at that tiny type in a dim church! 😃

take care,
amsjj 🙂
