Help! I facilitate an Adult Apologetics group and have had a number of requests for a presentation on “The Secret”. I know it is a combination New Age/ Health&Wealth thing but would love to find some resources from a Catholic apologist. Any help would be appreciated!

Lynnroo–I am not an apologist but my family had gotten caught up in the frenzy and popularity of the Secret. They had purchased the film and I dutifully watched with all of them but was quite put out with the simple idea that if you believe whatever strong enough and incorporate doing the image things that will help you get the results you seek it will happen. This is scary stuff. How many people are viewing this illogical approach to life with the ultimate end being major disappointment and potentially even worse.

I would much rather put my faith in God, our Creator, and know that I am trying to follow His example and live my life according to His directives-10 commandments and the great commandment-“To Love One Another As I Have Loved You”.

God Bless and good luck with your efforts to work through the issues to satisfy the thirst of so many people who keep looking for alternatives of human origin.

Carl

Let me preface by saying I am not an apologist, either, but I agree with Carl, it is scary stuff. There are several people in my school (teachers and administrators!!) who are very much into this stuff, so I read some of the book to see what it is about. There are passages which state that you are the creator, that you have the power and the authority to create whatever you want (health, riches, anything at all). You simply have to want it, visualize it, and believe that you can create it. If I recall correctly (and I do not have the book in front of me) there was one passage which flat out stated that you, the individual, are in fact God and you can create whatever you desire.

If I were holding a seminar on The Secret and how it relates to Catholicism, it would be a very very short seminar: The Secret is BLASPHEMY! I don’t know that the Church has spoken about “The Secret” specifically, though.

By the way, you may get more responses if you post this in the Popular Media forum, or perhaps in the Apologetics forum.

I attended a seminar today that dealt heavily with this topic. The speaker mentioned the book and movie on a few occations. It promted me to do some more research as it felt a bit “new agee” to me. I have not read the book or seen the movie. I noticed many of the contributors to the book are New Age related.

The overall comments in the seminar were very good and deal with your attitude and your approach on how you are successfull in life.

In my opinion those strong in their faith and grounded in the fact that God created us and we must use the gifts God has given us will not be pulled from there faith by this concept. I think that this type of thinking can enhance our spirituality and relationship with God.

Be very careful in your approach to things that appear New Age. They can be the work of the devil!

My wife had me buy a copy for her on e-bay, I had no idea what the heck it was about but Oprah said it was good so my wife had to have it. I watched it about a month ago with my wife, well actually I fell asleep before it ended. I actually can’t believe that anybody can take this serious, its a joke an absolute joke and a $40.00 joke at that. These guys must be laughing their heads off somewhere an a secluded beach eating lobster and drinking the finest of champagne. This is modern day snake oil for sure!

I bought the Secret three days ago! Everything in there is great! I did what the book said and I got instant results. It really is amazing and will help you live a much more positive life.

The only thing that minorly annoys me about the secret is that sometimes it makes it sound like the law of attraction is the only thing that decides future events for us. It should have more focus on our free will and God’s will as well. Even so, our God’s will, our will, and the law of the attraction work together in many ways.

The Bible does say that faith the size of a mustard seed moves mountains. If people actually believed that they’d have much more success. That is what the Secret will do for you.

I think you are slightly misinformed about New Age, though. All of them believe in God and do not even think the devil is real in the sense that you do. So how could they worship evil when their goal is to reach ultimate union with God and spread their own ‘light’ throughout the world? It’s really, really bad, annoying, and hurtful to call someone’s beliefs the work of Satan just because you disagree with them. In the future, please keep this in mind.

Thanks!

Scott

I personally think that we should just continue to post our thoughts about the Secret here. New people come to this site everyday and are not going to look through 51 pages of posts to see if their idea has been posted already or not. SOmetimes things need a fresh start!

Ahhh well…it doesn’t make that much of a difference. Some good thoughts have been posted here, so I think we shoudl continue the discussion.

New Age people may not worship evil, but they certainly don’t worship God. They’re not even Christian.

No, they have a God and a Goddess. They are pretty much the same exact thing as the Christian God, but ofcourse it wouldn’t be the Christian God because it’s Wicca!🙂 We should continue this discussion in the Non Catholic thread so wonderfully titled “What Bad Experiences Have You Had With Wicca?”

I’d be banned if I started a “What Bad Experience Have You Had With Catholics?” thread, but I’m not that low.

Not all New Age-y types, or Wiccans, believe in God / Goddess / whatever. I pretty much grew up Wiccan / Pagan, and I new plenty of folks who were woo-woo with a distinct Athiest bent.

Just goes to show that you can’t generalize, ESPECIALLY with woo-woo, as each individual has their own interpretation of truth.

🤷

Yes, I was too generalized there. I’m used to talking about Gardneriarian Wicca because that is the one I most closely relate to. New Age is an exetremely broad term. But there is one thing true New Age people have in common; they don’t practice dark magick.

According to whom? When people like Schucman who writes a book ‘A Course on Miracles’ that is dictated by a so-called spirit named Jesus is about as black magic as having a satanic mass my friend. New Age is just a sugared term for gnosticism which covers a very wide spectrum of areas. Black magic is not excluded here at all!

My mother and sister are really into this book. They tried to convince me of it one day, but finally my mother gave up and said to my sister, “he’s so close-minded. You can’t convince him of anything unless you can get the Pope to back you up” 😛

The problem with “The Secret” is that it presupposes that the power comes from within. As Christians, we know that the power comes from God. To believe otherwise is to violate God’s commandment about placing other gods ahead of Him.

The problem with ‘The Secret’ is that the spirit that channelled the information of this book is called ‘Abraham.’
