In Genesis 3:15 When God is talking to the serpent He says " I will put enmity between you and the women, and between YOUR offspring and hers.

Now I know that the women is Mother Mary, and her offspring is Jesus, but who/what is this offspring of the serpent? Is it sin? I mean it can’t be the devil because the devil is regarded as the serpent (Wis 2 24, jn 8, rv 12 9;20,2)

Thanks in advance! God Bless!

In Pope Benedict’s Jesus of Nazareth (Baptism-Transfiguration), although he doesn’t explicitly state this in the context of the Genesis passage, refers to the prophecy in Daniel about the great beasts proceeding from the sea (the whole idea of serpent/sea beast is a devilish figure in Scripture) represent a “succession of dominant secular powers” which he elsewhere describes a that which is opposed to godly things. Those powers are not the devil himself, but I would think the theology is fitting with his “offspring,” i.e. proceeding from a wicked source rather than a holy one. And as you say, it could be sin also. It doesn’t just have to have one depth of meaning.

This is what Jesus had to say to some of the Israeli leadership of the day:

Jn:8:44: Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

And back in Noah’s day the Lord said:

Gen:8:21: And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

Hence those who are born of the Holy Spirit of God surly love that which is of God, being children of God. Hence, run to God. But what are those who hate righteousness and would hind from the Presence of God? Who are they the children of?

Well I don’t assume the Devil has the ability to reproduce so…

Let’s first consider the Woman’s Seed. On the one hand, this is obviously Jesus, on
the other, we can gather that anyone siding with Jesus is also of the same Woman,
Mary, who in Catholic belief is the New Eve. As Eve is the Mother of All Humanity,
Mary would be the New Mother of All Who Trust In Christ.

Now on the Serpent’s Seed. Jesus called certain Jewish authorities of his day children
of the Devil, saying their father was the Devil, because they were opposing Jesus and
his ways. So anyone who is opposing Jesus (saying with discomfort) can be said as
being of the Serpent’s Seed.

So this is speaking in part, I believe, of Christianity verses
all False Religions, particularly those that seek to oppose
the True Christian Faith.
