In the Book of Revelation, there are seven churches. Do you realize the church at Philadelphia is the Catholic church? Read it.

The epistles to the seven Churches (Revelations 2:1-3:22)
The Churches are Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea. The Epistles are short exhortations to the Christians to remain steadfast in their faith, to beware of false apostles and to abstain from fornication and from meat offered to idols.

Cathdefender, there are no blunders here. Just questions we all need to have answered.
In addition to the resources posted by Prodigal Son 1, I would recommend The Navarre Bible book commentary on Revelation, which gives a lot of information about the seven churches John was addressing. They were the early Christians, real people dealing with issues of persecution and heresy that were already surfacing in the early Church. Reading about them really makes the Bible come alive. I’m reading it right now, so that’s why I responded to your post.

Dear Cath,
When John wrote the revelations, there was no other church, except the unversal church. What John wrote to us, those 7 Church is the representative of all church in the world. The number 7 can be interpreted as “complete” or “whole”.

A teacher at my old college and without naming names, it is a Catholic college. It wasn’t my subject or anything, he was kind of like a guidance counselor and we got to talking about Rev. That’s it.
I feel I am knowledgeable about my faith, but I am flabbergasted by this wrong info…I should of known better. Thanks. How do we know they are all the Catholic churches?

At one and the same time, they were Orthodox churches.
These were also the same churches which were involved in the Quartodeciman dispute with Victor I, bishop of Rome. Quartodecimanism is a method of calculating the date of Passover and Easter, placing Passover on the 14th of Nisan of the Jewish lunar calendar. Easter then might fall on any day of the week from year to year, as well as Sunday.
St. Irenaeus (who was a native son of those churches and went to Gaul as a missioner) opposed the bishop of Rome over the matter, advising he adopt a more moderate stance for the sake of Christian unity and indicating that quartodecimanism was the practice of Saint John, the Beloved Disciple. It was John who led these churches from Ephesus as a patriarchal figure and is believed by many to have authored Revelations.

Weren’t no baptists or Episcopalians, Lutherans nor Presbyterians around then, that’s for sure, so they must’ve all been Catholic (with all respect to my friend Hesychios, the schism between Catholic and Orthodox hadn’t occurred at that early date, so we mustn’t exclude our Orthodox brothers either)

Yet what is most interesting is that in the opening statement to this church John writes and I quote:
‘The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.’
This means that Peter could never have had the key that is mentioned in Isaiah 22:22. So then none of the Popes could ever have had this key either.

Yes, Jesus has the keys and he gave them to Peter. Only he could have given them to him. (Matt. 16:16-18)
If not - what did he mean when he told Peter:
"I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
