In Revelation, “the seven Spirits of God” are mentioned several times. The seven spirits are not specifically identified. I read that one interpretation is that it is referring to the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.

What is the recognized interpretation of the “seven Spirits of God”?

Thanks,

"…The Holy Spirit, therefore, is aptly represented by the septenary number.

The prophet Isaiah likewise says, “The Spirit of God shall rest on Him;” and thereafter calls our attention to that Spirit in His septenary work or grace, by saying, “The spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and piety; and He shall be filled with the spirit of the fear of God.” Isaiah 11:2-3

And what of the Revelation? Are they not there called the seven Spirits of God, Revelation 3:1 while there is only one and the same Spirit dividing to every one severally as He will? 1 Corinthians 12:11 But the septenary operation of the one Spirit was so called by the Spirit Himself, whose own presence in the writer led to their being spoken of as the seven Spirits."

There are two views I have seen, after reading many commentaries. They either tend toward the 7 spirits being the Holy Spirit, or angels. There are good arguments for both sides, so it’s a bit of a “take your pick” situation. I personally tend toward them being the Holy Spirit, although people that like to use this particular passage as an apologetic for the intercession of angels often prefer the angel interpretation, for obvious reasons.

Thank you both for your response.

I like to think the “seven Spirits of God” refers to the Holy Spirit and the seven gifts. In my own personal experience, these gifts are given individually or in combination depending on needs and and where we are at in our life.

Thanks and God Bless.

“And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of
the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the
seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth.” (Rev.5:6 NKJV)
Which are these seven Spirits and are they really seven Holy Spirits? Let’s read:
“The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel
and might. The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.” (Isa.11:2 NKJV)
According to the verse, there is only one Spirit of the Lord. But what are the seven that are mentioned?
They represent the fullness of the characters of the Holy Spirit. They are the following:
  1. Wisdom;
  2. Understanding;
  3. Counsel;
  4. Might;
  5. Knowledge;
  6. Fear (reverence);
  7. Righteousness (justice) (11:4)
Therefore, there are not seven Holy Spirits but seven characters of the Holy Spirits.
