continued from above…
Moses alone saw and spoke with God. Aaron and the successive High Priests could go once a year into the Holy of Holies, to the Ark of the Covenant, to offer sacrifices for the people’s sins. This was orchestrated by God…all of the sacrifices were a foreshadowing of the ultimate Sacrifice by Jesus.
There are reams of stuff written about how all of the instruments of the Temple/Tabernacle, including the very layout and construction of the Temple, are foreshadowings of Christ and teach us about Him. Look it up if you’re interested. But it’s important to realize that the Tabernacle is not a ridiculous concept…it’s a beautiful example of God’s mercy to us in choosing to meet with us.
Nowadays, there is no Temple that is full of God’s Spirit, but His Holy Spirit lives in each of us who are baptized into the faith, and Jesus is literally present in every Tabernacle in every Catholic Church in the world. Instead of just being present in the Temple of Jerusalem, God is now physically present literally all over the world, and we have the high, holy, and privileged ability to go and meet with Him, every single day!
