They call it “The Shocking Youth Message” on YouTube. But it’s a message straight from God’s word and one of the main reasons it’s considered shocking is because many of our churches are not preaching it anymore. This message is important and can make a difference between life and death for many. It was presented to youth but is relevant to everyone:

An interview with the young man, Paul Washer, who preached that message provides a background to what led him to preach as he did to the youth in 2002. The interview is here:

This is one of my favorite videos on youtube. I have shown it to our confirmation group. (I’m one of the teachers). I think it is shocking and shameful that there isn’t more sermons like this today.

There may be some things that Paul Washer says that don’t quite gel with Catholic doctrine, but I haven’t been able to find them.

I’m sorry, but this guy really ticks me off.

His dramatic emotional delivery is quite cliche, and he introduces his speech by claiming that God is speaking through him. He then tells the crowd that if he is right, it is they that should be worried. I guess he’s homefree on his way to salvation.

Later on he chastises the crowd for cheering because he is “talking about you.” I rarely talk about judgement, but this guy IS judgmental. He also talks about how likely it is that more than half of the people present will probably go to Hell.

Further on, he talks about just how much love it takes for him to stand up there and talk before that many people. Quite the opposite of humility.

He whines that it will cost him so much to not be asked back to the youth festival.

He references Christianity quite a bit, but he only has half the truth considering he apparently doesn’t believe in anything to do with the Catholic Church.

“We were born radically depraved and God-hating.” VERY Protestant thing to say. It is a Protestant concept that man is a disgusting worm-ridden thing that is worthy of nothing. Catholic teaching says otherwise.

He says “God must hate because God is love”, don’t even know what to say about that.

He makes a good speech about the magnitude of Jesus Christ’s death. I like that part.

He mentions repentance a lot, but he is leading people down the wrong path through Protestantism. There is no way to be free of sin except by the sacraments.

He mentions “The Church” a whole lot, but I don’t think he is referring to the Catholic Church. I suppose he means the “Church” as the whole of Christianity but that is entirely wrong.

I’m not going to listen to the whole thing, but if anyone else has some issues with this video, please add them.

I started to watch it - but anyone that needs an hour to talk about two verses of the Bible to Youth IMO likes to hear themselves talk - I am more faith through reason - we don’t need to scare kids into pews.

Personally, I am not a fan of his theology and teaching. Paul Washer is vehemently anti-catholic. For example, he says (when asked if he ever taught church history) there is no church history, just the history of an apostate wh*re. :banghead:

Not sure where he thinks that we got the bible…dropped from the sky probably.

This is absolutely not true. The Catholic Church teaches that while the sacraments bout with grace, God is not limited in his forgiveness and bound by the sacraments. Even a common-sense reading of the concept of forgiveness shows that it is through grace alone. God is free to distribute his grace in any way he chooses - just because he chose the sacraments as his method of distribution does not mean he cannot distribute it otherwise.

In the case of other Christian denominations, the Catholic Church clearly teaches that they can be forgiven and saved.

Edit: However, I don’t like this guy, either.

This guy is a member of the Calvinist cult. I do not support their beliefs, in particular Total Depravity, Predesntination, and Once Saved Always Saved. I believe in Free Will

I’m a little startled by your use of the word cult, generally LDS object to it’s usage for themselves and others.

He has good intentions, but he’s just the typical American nut obsessed with calling everyone false teachers and “interpretations” and essentially calling himself Father.

Well…alot of people associated with Evangelical Christianity see us belonging to a man made religion…it is really something here in the USA regarding Christianity…

On the side here…fear of punishment by God will not get us into heaven…we must love God with all our heart, soul, and mind…

I am learning right now the language of young people…how and what they relate to in helping them recognize Christ in this dehumanizing world…

It is because the world now is so dehumanizing, so hopeless…I just saw this week’s “Newsweek” and the combination of pornography and prostitution is so related now and the degradation of women increasing…along with the sex trafficking…and the goings-on of high government and finance…our young people have to carry the consequences of all of this…that they lose the sense of who they are.

It goes back to helping them get into contact with their true self, the ‘I’…and coming to recognize the presence of ‘You’…Jesus…and that drawing…it is Him…and He draws with people you don’t relate to …He wanting you to discover Him in those around you…thus a penance and a cross…the means of re-humanizing the world around us…
