A caller rang in to Catholic Answers Live and asked a question about the Sign of the Cross. Here is Karl Keating’s explanation of why Catholics make the Sign of the Cross. Any errors are due to my poor transcription, not Karl’s wonderful words.
"The Sign of the Cross indicated the Trinity by the words we say.
We mark on our bodies the Cross, the instrument of our Salvation.
We make the sign over our heads as an indication that we want God’s Word to come in and be understood by us.
We make the sign over our hearts to indicate that we want God’s Word to come into our hearts and enliven our lives and actions. "
We make the sign over our shoulders to indicate that we wish to have the strength to be able to live/carry out the Word of God.
