The Sign of The Trident

I recently saw a documentary about the Catacombs in Rome. They found etched on the walls a sign that is shaped like a pitch fork that is called a Trident. The Jewish host that was narrating the story said that this was the sign of the Trinity for the Jews. That this showed their conversions to Christianity. At first they thought it was pagan because there was a dolphin with the Trident through it, then they settled that it truly was the sign of the Trinity for the Jews conversions. Any one see this?

The trident-Trinity connection could be valid, but when I read the initial post, I immediately thought of the older rite for the blessing of baptismal water in which the priest breathes on the water in the shape of the Greek letter Psi, which looks very much like a trident. Others who know better may be able to discuss the importance of the letter Psi in the rite, but I believe it represents the Spirit moving over the face of the waters of creation, breathing life into the void (Psi is the first letter of the Greek Psuche/psyche, meaning soul). That the Psis in the catacombs were accompanied by dolphins solidifies, for me, the baptismal associations while using imagery which, to the “pagan” eye, would not have appeared particularly suspect.

Jocobovici is entertaining, but I would not take seriously anything he has to say about Christianity. His lack of knowledge and understanding about the New Testament and Christianity is astounding.

An example is the “Naked Archaeologist” episode about John the Baptist. It is Jocobovici’s contention that John the Baptist, rather than Jesus, was supposed to be the true messiah. As proof, he shows a well-known painting depicting the birth of John the Baptist. It shows the Blessed Virgin holding the newborn John in her arms. “Where is Jesus in this picture?” Jocobovici asks. “The fact that Mary is holding John instead of Jesus indicates that John is the true messiah.”

The problem with his theory is obvious to any 8 year-old catholic who has been to catechism class: Since John is 6 months older than Jesus, Jesus was not yet born at the time depicted by the painting.

I think that undermines his credibility.

Actually there was a competing group who insisted John the Baptist was the messiah and Jesus was a usurper. I believe they still exist, but very small. They have a very abreviated set of Christian scriptures plus some of their own.
 
I know, I was just pointing out Jocobovici’s ignorance of all things Christian.

No, it wasn’t the letters Psi, I wish I could draw it for you. It looked like a fork with three points, like a pitch fork. It was the Trinity they said. It does make sense to me, it’s just the dolphin throwing me off.:confused:

Yes, I agree with you about him, but then why would he stick up for us Christians if it weren’t true?

The Mandaeans, there are a few in Iraq and Iran, though most Iraqi Mandaeans fled to Syria and Jordan after the 2003 invasion. They also reject Moses and Abraham as false prophets, as well as Jesus and according to wikipedia, regard the God of Judaism as evil.

Just to be sure we’re talking about the same thing, check out the images of the Greek letter PSI here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%CE%A8 . They look very very much like tridents.

Jocobovici appeared in the recent show about the tomb of Jesus “discovery”, too.

That’s it! That’s the Trident! The dolphin was worshipped by the pagans as the God Posidon, they put the Trident through it which symbolizes the Jews conversion to Christianity! That’s it! Case solved. 👍
 
Just needed to add that the Catacombs where this was found was exclusively Jewish. It also had a Menorrah and a picture of the temple with a star over it depicting the birth of the Messiah. Conversion from Judiasm to Christianity/Catholicism.
