The significance of the shell used in baptisms

Morning All,

I had a question. Does anyone know the significance of the shell that the priests uses to baptise people in the RCC? I could not find anything about it.

This was an answer given to this question by Puzzleannie:

the scallop shell is an early symbol of the Resurrection since as it opens by itself it reveals the mussel inside

John the Baptist is also shown in some traditional Christian art as baptizing using a scallop shell.

Could anyone elaborate on this? Scallops and mussels are two different kinds of shellfish, their shells are a totally different shape, and I feel pretty confident that no scallop shell has ever opened up to reveal a mussel inside.

I didn’t notice that. I’m sure she meant to say scallop, not mussel.

I think the poster probably meant muscle and not mussel.
Scallops have a central adductor muscle.

Hmmm…to be serious, is there perhaps some reference to finding a pearl - remember Jesus talked of ‘the Pearl of great price’? Do scallops have pearls like oysters do?

(To complicate things still further, mussels have pearls, too).

Ooooh that is an interesting point of view. I like that. There are so many spiritual things that can be inferred from that. I would have to say that the Church is the greatest Treasure besides Jesus of course, that we have access today. And baptism is the gate to the Church and the Sacraments. Nice. Thanks for posting this.

And I asked do scallops have pearls like oysters do, and yeppers they do.

I thought the Pearl of Great Price was a Mormon thing.:confused:
