What is Blasphemy in the modern sense?
How serious of a sin is it, and what punishments (both spiritual and Church Law) would be prescribed?

Blasphemy is an outdated term used in the early life of the Church, as a means of control by the Vatican / Church at the time, If the Church/ Vatican, didn’t like what you were saying congrats you were a blasphemer, though I suppose there were actual cases where there was real Blasphemy but the over use of the word and charges really makes it hard to figure out how accurate things are.

As of the modern era, the word Blasphemy really only holds any standing in the Muslim religion, where if one steps out of line or flat out says something against the Muslim faith then it is off to the punishment zone. Plenty of articles are written constantly about blasphemy in the Muslim world, not so much ever any more with Catholicism, and for one to really cross that line, the person would pretty much have to acknowledge that they are a valid Catholic, went through the sacraments, then that person would have to go out of his or her way to physically teach with some kind of authority or publish a book promoting all kinds of anti- catholic views or be trying to negatively influence others purposefully and willingly against the Church to some degree to really be considered Blasphemy and the punishment ??

Well considering we are not living in the times when the Spanish Inquisition could come and grab you and lock you up, it would fall under normal conditions of Reconciliation , or unless a Bishop personally takes up the issue and determines otherwise.

Christ always forgives and does so rather easily, all the time, every time, The Vatican and the Church, not so much.

Modern Catholic Dictionary:

BLASPHEMY. Speaking against God in a contemptuous, scornful, or abusive manner. Included under blasphemy are offenses committed by thought, word, or action. Serious contemptuous ridicule of the saints, sacred objects, or of persons consecrated to God is also blasphemous because God is indirectly attacked. Blasphemy is a grave violation of charity toward God. Its gravity may be judged by the capital punishment in the Old Testament, severe penalties of the Church, and in many cases also of the State for blasphemous speech or conduct. In order for a person to sin gravely in this manner, he must use blasphemous expressions and realize the contemptuous meaning of what he says or does. (Etym. Latin blasphemia, blasphemy; from Greek blasphēmein, to speak ill of.)
