What constitutes gluttony?
  1. Is eating at a buffet until your stuffed a sin?
  2. Is eating a snack when your not really hungry, but… you could go for more, a sin?
  3. Is eating until you are full a sin?
  4. Is eating when you are sort of full from the main course but then having desert a sin?
I ask this because I’ve been examining my life to see if I have any faults or places I need Jesus and Mary to help me with.
I also ask this because I went on a 3 day fast as penance and reparation, and well, I lost 6 pounds… Also I’m only 15 and my family has told me that they worry about how skinny I am. Is eating a little bit more to gain some weight back a sin:D?

Thanks and God bless!

Your points 1-4 above are NOT sins.
If you are indeed underweight then you should follow your parents advice and eat more.

I suppose you could add a fifth point which is something that I’ve seen in spiritual books.
  1. Eating sumptuously, wanting only the best foods, exquisitely prepared.
Luke 16:19 There was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen; and feasted sumptuously every day.
The absorption into festive eating and living was the downfall of the rich man, who became insensitive to the poor through this luxurious lifestyle.
  1. Is eating at a buffet until your stuffed a sin?
Yes it could be, especially if it is causing a problem with your health and you willfully ignore it in order to indulge yourself.
  2. Is eating a snack when your not really hungry, but… you could go for more, a sin?
I asked a priest this question in confession because our society is very prone to doing this. He said no, but I think it could pave the way to a habit of not being temperate. I do try to watch my motives when I am just grabbing cookies and sweets all day long. 😊
  3. Is eating until you are full a sin?
I don’t believe it is. There is nothing that says we must leave the table half full.
  4. Is eating when you are sort of full from the main course but then having desert a sin?
Again, no. If we have blessed our food and eaten in thanksgiving, desserts are part of that meal, and part of that blessing.
I’m a little curious and I admire you for being so young, yet having sensitivity to this when very few even think about it. The Lord must be giving you light to seek the truth about it.

Eating more to gain back needed weight is NOT a sin.

Remember, that you body is the temple of God and we are to take proper care of it.

If you are underweight, fasting very strictly is not for you.

There are many ways of drawing closer to the Lord…giving up TV shows, praying more, receiving the Sacraments regularly.

I agree with thistle that those things are not sins *in themselves. *Eating past the point of comfort could be gluttony if you do it all the time. But don’t just go by what family or friends might consider “skinny”. Talk to your doctor about what’s a healthy weight for you.

Gluttony is an inordinate desire for the *pleasure *connected with food or drink, it’s putting to much importance on food or drink,
basically making those things your God, being willing to offend God just to have them, or like living to eat instead of eating to live, you know?

gluttony in the case of eating is only rarely ever a mortal sin,
some cases of serious sins of gluttony would be like stuffing yourself as full as you can, and then forcing yourself to vomit so you can do it again, or of course drinking to the point of drunkenness,
or being willing to deprive your family and let them suffer so you can have the food you love…gluttony is sinful when you make it to important in your life, especially to the point of hurting yourself or others.

you can also be committing gluttony by not eating enough though, although it may not be mortally sinful, but i would recommend talking to your priest about it, and also your doctor, find out how much you should be eating, and if you feel the need to do penances, do it by choosing foods you don’t like(or don’t like as much) or deny yourself certain condiments or seasonings, but don’t neglect your health, because God can be just as offended at that,
eating to much is bad for you, and eating to little is bad for you, you need temperance,
but don’t worry to much, this life is a learning process, and you just need to be patient and let God teach you how He sees best, God doesn’t expect us to be perfect, He just wants us to reach for perfection, just keep moving, as long as we’re moving, God can guide us,

ok, so don’t worry, those 4 things you mentioned are not mortally sinful,
always seek your priests help before trying such extreme penances, and perhaps you should have a spiritual director(if you don’t already)

ok hope this helps, tc bye bye.

The key here is the Holy Spirit residing in a believer and keeping the body healthy…Obesity is a major problem these days…It’s not just the amount, but what’s in it that keeps the body healthy…I have health issues from a work accident and don’t do much strenuous exercise. I eat more and smaller meals and weigh about 5’9" and weigh about 130…We eat red meat (venison) about 3-4 times a month…Hormone free turkey and chicken…Do alot of stir fry with olive oil…Alot of homade soups…Not many processed foods…We eat one portion on a ten inch plate and fruit/dessert…I have good pretzels and some 100% juice later in the eve…Going to all you can eat is ok but not to just eat and stuff yourself…Great pece to you as you desire to draw closer to Jesus in all areas of your life…

For those who are underweight, purposely not eating enough calories to maintain a healthy body weight for your sex and height, might be sinful.

Check medical charts for your range of acceptable rates.

Do not purposely harm yourself by under eating.

Oh… Ok. I don’t mean to ask too many questions, but what about if you have a few more bites on your plate (But you are already very full) and your mother tells you to finish it?

Oh thanks for the help, I’ve always been wondering what gluttony is.

Mine is a very complicated situation… Long story made short:
I was born and raised in a strong pentecostal-protestant family. After MUCH prayer, thinking, research ect… I feel that I have been lead to the Catholic church. The thing is that my entire family is very anti-catholic and converting would cause a lot of disorder and arguments. My mother also has noticed my interest in Catholicism and has expressed her extreme disapproval of it. So I’m basically stuck. 😦 I asked a priest secretly one time what to do. He told me not to go against my mother’s wishes for me, and I should wait until I’m old enough to make my own decisions. Thankfully though, I have to opportunity to secretly go out to Eucharistic Adoration on Saturdays. deep breath sigh So in the mean time I’m seeking out the truth and trying to understand Catholic doctrines more. 😃

God Bless:)!

I commend your courage. Many adults, let alone teens do not have the integrity to do what is right even when they could face a tremendous backlash for it from those that are supposed to hold them in their best interest.

I find that the matters of the soul always takes precedence over worldly matters.

You are in the full right to seek out the true faith. You can only pray that one day your family will listen to the calling of Jesus in the Catholic Church.

I am happy that you are experiencing the beautiful holiness of Eucharistic Adoration.
Keep learning about the faith. Jesus is with you always.🙂

I hope and pray that your family not only accepts your desire to become a Catholic, but that they themselves will also see the truth and enter into the fullness of the faith. Don’t forget how powerful the experience of learning about early church history and reading the early church fathers can be for an anti-Catholic protestant. If the opportunity arises, you might recommed these books to your family:

As for fasting, I think your primary obligation at this time in your life is obedience to your parents. You’ll be 18 before you know it ;).

You may consider a suggestion I recently heard from Fr. Mitch Pacwa, though. When you wish to fast, and your parents disapprove, try eating foods you don’t like as a form of penance. Rather than fasting completely from all food, you’ll be fasting from those foods you really enjoy, and making the sacrifice of eating those foods you don’t care for.

God Bless!

My dear friend

My understanding is if you eat so much you vomit from being too full its a serious sin of gluttony.

God bless you and pray for me please:thumbsup:🙂
