Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The full hymn can be read HERE. It has been a blessing to ponder the words of this hymn, and hopefully it will be a blessing for others who follow these threads up to Holy Saturday. There are 20 stanzas and today, we’re listening to these stanzas in prayer:
Can the human heart refrain
From partaking in her pain,
In that Mother’s pain untold?

Bruised, derided, cursed, defiled,
She beheld her tender Child,
All with bloody scourges rent.
For those who love Mary, our Mother, and through her, love Jesus her Son, it is difficult to hear in these verses and in the whole hymn, all Their Pierced Hearts endured. Mary who is only human, had to be strengthened by the power of God within her soul to stand beneath the Cross on which her Son was hanging, so bruised and bloody.

Yet, there are actually human persons today in our world who do not consider God, and even care less about His Mother. If they did care, would they speak as they do, hate as they do? We cannot judge anyone’s heart, only God can, but we are told by God (cf 1 John 4:1) not to trust every spirit. We hear words from some people, and God’s Word tells us out of the fullness of the heart, the mouth speaks.

Each of us needs to listen to what we ourselves say and do, for we too have sinned against God and one another. We too have spoken words we later regret for our conscience (if we have a “rightly formed” conscience) will reveal our faults to us. The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin, but do we listen to Him? Do we ask, to receive His Grace? Do we seek to find Him or knock on the door of His Heart that He may open to us?

Come Holy Spirit, enable us to partake of our Mother’s pain, and stand with her beneath the Cross of Jesus.
