Exactly how specific do you have to be? For example if someone commited idolatry would they have to specify what they worshipped? Or would just saying they commited idolatry be enough?

Are you talking idol worship or non-catholic religions? If idol worship, simply say that, and add if there were extenuating circumstances (ie., you sacrificed you baby to an idol). If you mean practicing a non-catholic religion, say something like “I practiced (insert religion her)”.

The idea of Confession is that it is a summary. Most sins can be categorised (in kind) where you do not have to explain. Examples like lying or missing mass on days of obligation. Some sins, you may need to phrase them to give a more realistic information that the priest can understand.

Idolatry is quite general, I think, and therefore you have to give a bit of information. Is it the occult or magic or witchcraft or just worshipping other gods? This is also a sin that perhaps needs specific repentance like renouncing the devil and renewal of belief in God.

I don’t know. We met cases like this usually in seminars and they were quite complicated.

God bless.

Hi
Breaking of the the First Commandment is a grievous Mortal sin it should be said in number and in kind, detailed if possible, specifying what they worship would be good.

Then God spoke all these words:

Exodus 20:2 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; 3 you shall have no other gods before me.4 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, 6 but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Deuteronomy 4:4 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, 6 but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.

4 So now, Israel, give heed to the statutes and ordinances that I am teaching you to observe, so that you may live to enter and occupy the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. 2 You must neither add anything to what I command you nor take away anything from it, but keep the commandments of the Lord your God with which I am charging you. 3 You have seen for yourselves what the Lord did with regard to the Baal of Peor—how the Lord your God destroyed from among you everyone who followed the Baal of Peor, 4 while those of you who held fast to the Lord your God are all alive today.
