The speed of threads

I’ve been away for a while. Coming back I notice how fast the forum moves. I’m grateful for responses of course but sometimes I feel I am caught in a whirlpool or fast rapids. Does this affect the quality of our communication?
Are we tempted to give pat answers instead of thoughtful replies? I’m not pointing the finger at anyone by the way. Because I have received both.
I’m just sharing this odd feeling with you. It is unique to CA . I think I’m seasick. 🙂
There is a growing body of literature about the harmful psychological effects of the internet. One of them is dehumanization and less ability to concentrate on long-term tasks. The physical neurological structure of the brain is different for new children than it is for older generations because of the different ways they are having to encounter and interact in the world.

But there are some positive sides too.

this is the place you want to be

you can post in old threads if you wish

otherwise we move quickly here

time,tide & CAF wait for no man…

sorry for the “pat” response

I think the point about losing touch with history and the irony of that on a site about Catholicism is not lost on me!
Swings and roundabouts, I guess. If you get the hang of it, it’s stimulating and fun, and I do find it useful to have an extra ‘sounding board’ for some things, and a place to ask for prayer. If I’m away from the internet for a while, it can be difficult to plunge back in to the intensity of the board, but there are downsides to everything, I guess.

You’re correct. It’s classified by the NSA as a “Cyber Sonic Boom” (CSB). One nearly blew apart my iPhone and crippled my hand last week.

Sometimes, it is worthwhile to put your phone in a cushioned box at night to prevent CSB’s from harming you at night. Particularly if you have upgraded to high speed unlimited data option.

I put it inside a Pelican case.

Wise choice. I know a couple people who only used a plastic baggie, and a CSB blew the whole thing across the room, shattering a mirror.

Some poor chap down the street did nothing but watch Pokemon for 8 hours and THIS HAPPENED… ☠️ Nobody will say this but CSB’s are the REAL reason they’re banning ZTE Phones! iPhones can handle the surge a little better without going critical. I’m typing on-top of an ice pack right now…

Good choice. The dual screen ZTE phones have another shortcoming. If you place the 2 screens 90 degrees apart you set up an orthogonal condition. The one screen influence on the other is, of course, related to the cosine of the angle. As this approaches 90 degrees, you divide by this amount. The cosine of 90 degrees, is of course 0, so this sets up an infinite speed condition. The CSB condition becomes inevitable.

I just try to stay out of the argument posts, unless a Catholic defense is needed.

Good gracious, yes. I tend to gravitate towards threads about what is currently happening in the church calendar, picking up bits of Catholic practice and culture I didnt know about, and the more genuine cries for help - people who just need a bit of reassurance. I do open interesting or oddly titled threads and often find them to be trolls, which is sometimes entertaining to deal with, but mostly best flagged and left alone.

When posting my own threads, I try to be aware that often people come here needing a lift in amidst the world of complaints and negativity, so I post honestly, but with an eye to encouragement.

hey cruciferi
glad to see there is some wit in the younger generation. You carry the baton for us gentle old folk

The speed of threads is concerning but along with that is when you look at some of the threads there is a huge blow up of off topic banter of a few people who seem to believe this forum is nothing more than a personal play play place.

It can be a thread about a parenting issue in which the OP has serious problems an suddenly it’s all about ice cream. It certainly wastes a lot of time having to wade through the junk to get to the serious stuff. Wish CAF had a junk folder like email.

For me, I will say that by making it harder to find old thread within a topic (the scroll down of threads in a topic can take a while) that dies seem to make threads get lost quickly unless it’s one of the more popular ones. (See Philosophy’s evolution threads.) Makes it harder to get easy continuity so that probably leads to more threads.
