If the cathedral burning was sad this is even worse the second I saw this images of spires that look like eyesores started to flood my mind. It would be extremely unfortunate if a modern spire was to be built on the beautiful cathedral.

I don’t see anything depressing about it. The old spire was clearly a danger due to its construction. I’m sure they won’t pick something awful to replace it. How about trying to think positive?

I’m sure that rebuilding will match the architecture of Notre Dame. They have experts who know how to do this stuff 🙂

I have only heard the words restore and rebuild used. Not redesign. I don’t think think they will change how it looked.

What’s scaring people is this tweet from the prime minister, where he presents the option of a spire adapted to our times (as well as one that is identical, etc.)–it seems nothing is off the table:

That being said, I have more confidence in the state than the clergy to oversee a worthy restoration.

Interesting (and sad) article here about how the state stopped a lot of wreckovations and what wreckovations were done were often done by clergy without permission.

I would hope he would at least adapt the material to our times. I sure don’t want to see a wooden spire put back up there to potentially catch fire again.

The good thing about the government doing this, with the help of very wealthy citizens, is that cost won’t be an object. Neither will pandering to all kinds of special interest groups within the Church.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with this. I too would trust the state over the Church to respect Notre-Dame’s architectural heritage. Personally, I don’t mind if the new spire is an exact replica or not, but it at least has to have a style that fits with the gothic architecture.

Anything else would look weird. For example, the low altar in Notre-Dame was in a strange modern style and totally stuck out like a sore thumb. It got buried under the falling spire and rubble, so hopefully that’s the end of that.

I would agree I would not mind if it wasn’t exactly like the old one I would be cool if they used steel for the construction of the new one but as long as it isn’t something like this I will be happy

Only pandering to special interest groups outside the Church. There are always special interest groups involved when the government gets involved, especially something as important as this.
