So I just got done reading the book about DMT and the possibility that it opens a door to a different realm, or astral projection. In addition, I read an article by a professor saying that it is possible that the molecule allows us to see things that we evolved not to see, which of course I believe is rubbish.

But my question is this: it is universal that the visions brought on by DMT are the same, elves and clowns or these wierd little men that talk telepathically. Is there any argument against this since it is a universal experience? Is this proof of Jung’s collective unconscious? Is it all an illusion even if it is universal? Is it all demonic?
 
Confirmation bias, perhaps? A work of the subconscious mind?

Im not sure on seeing other dimensions or astral projection, but we know for a fact, there are spirits interacting in our world, and we know there is a spirit realm…IDK about DMT, but it is possible some chemical/ method, could enable us to actually see these things.

Our bodies are chemical, so it is possible that a chemical could loosen our hold on life enough to reveal the spirit world.

It’s not something you or anybody should admire to become involved in.

Humans have strong pattern recognition regions of our brains. We use these to interpret faces and recognize other people. When drugs over stimulate these regions, we falsely register non-faces as faces.

Since our brains all work in a similar manner, we tend to see the same kinds of hallucinations. Thus we see “elves” and other mythical creatures, because our brains are falsely recognizing the similar random signals as similar fantastical faces.

Further, our brains have “mirror” regions, that let us predict what others are thinking or feeling, based what we would think or feel given our observations of their behavior. Drugs can overstimulate these regions, causing us to “hear” our own thoughts, but we wrongly attribute these thoughts to others (real or imaginary). This creates a false sense of “telepathy”.

This really isn’t any sort of “collective conscience”; there is no actual link between individuals, just complex mechanisms in our minds that behave in similar ways, allowing us to predict the thoughts and feelings of other minds. Similar brains function similarly, and thus there are shared thoughts, beliefs, and fantasies that exists across cultures and peoples, because we are all one human species.

Collective unconscious implies that we somehow possess a “shared mind,” as the unconscious is the iceberg-mass of our human mind. But we do not share our minds, any more than we share the life of our solid bodies.

I think it is incorrect to say “the visions brought on by DMT are the same.” I read somewhere that DMT trips can be “heavenly,” with a striking similarity to some near-death experiences, and also similar to the effects of other psychedelic drugs like LSD. In near-death experiences, some people see heaven, and some see hell. On LSD, some people have good trips, and some have bad trips.

It sounds to me like all of these are psychological responses to a physical disturbance of brain activity. The hallucination (or vision, if you prefer) depends on the person and the circumstances, it’s not universal, and it does not open a door (or open our mind) to another realm. It’s a very convincing illusion.

By the way, steer clear of that stuff.

Why not? As long as it didnt cause any personal harm, It would be kind of exciting to see such a thing…or maybe terrifying?

The more I think about it, a chemical may achieve this, but in reality, the best way would be to try and find what light spectrum these beings and the spiritual realm itself exists in. Humans can only ‘see’ certain light/ wavelengths, I would not put it past someone to create something that would enable viewing the spirit realm.

Justifiably terrifying.

The human psyche, without the protection of the fully-alive body, would be in the spirit world like a cat thrown into the shark tank.

If if is possible, as I believe, that these drugs work by loosening our hold on life, that alone would be a reason to stay away.

Maybe seeing this kind of stuff while still in human form, would be too much for our psyche, it could drive us insane from fear. I think you are right, it may sound exciting to see these things, but upon actually seeing them, we would probably wish we never had!
