I was really amazed when I read about how St Francis lived his life and how he was essentially a rich man who became a beggar. Not only did he beg, but he made it a requirement for his early followers. By begging St Francis relied on God for his day to day sustenance.
Then I think about my attitude towards those who beg. As they say in Protestant circles, God has been “dealing” with me. In other words I have felt convicted - convicted to give when I am able.
Whereas I would close my eyes when a peddler walked down the train, now I feel led to give. If a homeless person asks me for 1 dollar, i am more likely to give.
That is not to say I don’t doubt myself. Sometimes I think that surely there are shelters and pantries that I can donate too. Or I say, that person is going to use the money on drugs.
But I have been thinking, what if that person woken up one day and prayed, “Lord, let me get money to eat.” What if God wants me to be the vehicle by which he shows his mercy? Am I open to it?
As Matthew 25:35 says:
I wonder what St. Francis would say?

As Matthew 25:35 says:
It is becoming harder and harder for me to turn my head when someone asks for 50 cents and I know I have it.34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
I wonder what St. Francis would say?
