The State of Grace

ok, please bear with me. I’m still learning

I was wondering that since one needs to be in a State of Grace in order to recieve Communion, does the State of Grace only mean mortal sins or venial too?
I mean, when one goes to confession one week, and then the next week or day attends Mass, but is aware of some venial sin comitted during the time between confessions, is one required to refrain from communion and go to confession again, or can they partake in Communion?

I hope I can answer this for you. When one is in a state of grace, they are not in a state of grave, or mortal sin.

You must refrain from Communion if you become aware of a mortal sin…or if you are able to go to Confession ASAP after recieving Communion. The intention here is the key point. If you are in a state of mortal sin and you recieve Communion KNOWINGLY and WILLFULLY, then you have committed a greater mortal sin by profaning the body and blood of Christ.

On the other hand, throughout the Mass we are cleansed of venial sins…through the holy water at the entrance, through the Penitential rite, and prior to Communion we are called to do an examination of conscience personally (this is our duty to avoid profaning Christ).

If you are guilty of only venial sins, those sins are cleansed from you by recieving the sacrament.

However, please keep in mind that you should still go to confessino even if you are aware of only venial sins, for those tend to be repetetive and the hardest sometimes to stop.

If you have a Catechism, you should trying looking this up. And if you can find a Baltimore Catechism, I strongly recommend it.

In any case, I hope I’ve been helpful (and if not completely correct, please, someone step in so I don’t mislead anyone!)

as was stated above, it is not necessary to bring venial sins to Reconciliation. they are forgiven in the penitential rite, through the use of holy water, and even through Communion itself.

My God! If we had to be free of venial sins to go to communion, we would never receive! You can commit a venial sin while lining up to approach the altar!

The Mass begfins with a penitential rite where you ask forgiveness for your sins. This is a worthy preparation for communion. Furthermore, communion itself, received with faith and love, effects the forgiveness of venial sins and helps us avoid mortal sins. Here from the Catechism of the Catholic Church :

[1394](javascriptpenWindow(‘cr/1394.htm’) As bodily nourishment restores lost strength, so the Eucharist strengthens our charity, which tends to be weakened in daily life; and this living charity wipes away venial sins.231 By giving himself to us Christ revives our love and enables us to break our disordered attachments to creatures and root ourselves in him:

Since Christ died for us out of love, when we celebrate the memorial of his death at the moment of sacrifice we ask that love may be granted to us by the coming of the Holy Spirit. We humbly pray that in the strength of this love by which Christ willed to die for us, we, by receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit, may be able to consider the world as crucified for us, and to be ourselves as crucified to the world. . . . Having received the gift of love, let us die to sin and live for God.232

The more we share the life of Christ and progress in his friendship, the more difficult it is to break away from him by mortal sin. The Eucharist is not ordered to the forgiveness of mortal sins - that is proper to the sacrament of Reconciliation. The Eucharist is properly the sacrament of those who are in full communion with the Church.

right before communion we all pray together: “Lord, I am not worthy to recieve you but only say the word and i shall be healed.”

I think GOD honors that request and heals us so we don’t recieve communion unworthily.
