Picture above: St. John of God is depicted saving the sick from a hospital fire. He lived in 16th-century Grenada where he rented a house and gathered in the outcasts of the town. (Wikipedia)

"The work of John was supported by some but criticized by others. Some people, including the people he helped, treated him badly. One day, while praying before a crucifix, John seemed to see before him Christ Jesus, Our Lady, and St. John the Apostle. Our Lady stepped forward with a crown of thorns. She pressed it hard upon John’s head and said, ‘John, it is by thorns and sufferings that you must win the crown my Son has waiting for you in heaven.’”
