In 1928 in Mexico, Catholics were revolting against a government viciously persecuting the Catholic faith. A flag-bearer during this revolt, the boy was captured. As soldiers led him to the place where he would be killed, they told him if you shout “Death to Christ the king,” your life will be spared. He answered with “Viva Christ the king,” and “Long live our Lady of Guadalupe,” and was shot.
The Vatican now has approved the miracle needed for his canonization, which might occur next month. He already has been beatified.

Such a story, from someone right here in NA and in the 1900s, makes clear to me just how one “counts the cost” and how I am far too chicken to ever be a saint.🤷

Yup saw this kid in the movie “For Greater Glory” which was released last 2012.
 
Great article. I’m going to seek out the film.

I have a beautiful crucifix which belonged to a Cristero, and was given to me by a retired Mexican Carmelite monk about 20 years ago.

It’s a pectoral cross, and way too large and heavy to actually wear, but it feels great to hold and carry. It’s one of my favorite relics/devotionals.
