When Catholicism was being fiercely persecuted in Mexico in the 1920s, Miguel Pro was a priest serving Catholics in an underground Church. He had great charismatic attraction. When he was captured, he was executed by a firing squad under trumped-up changes without a trial. His execution had enormous impact. Then, as he was shot, he held his arms out in the form of a cross and cried “Long live Christ the King.” In spite of the government’s enmity for Catholicism, which commanded that there be no public demonstration, 40,00 people joined together for his funeral.
His feast day occurs at a very appropriate time, near the Feast of Christ the King, which in 2017 is on Sunday, November 26.
