Move over Orson Welles. There’s a new “Fr. Mapple” in town.
In
Moby Dick, Herman Melville expands the story of Jonah’s 4 chapters of ~ 1,250 words into a 3,500+ word sermon that rivets me still. Laced with colorful nautical language, Melville’s insights still ring true today.
The Sermon. Chapter IX. Herman Melville. 1922. Moby-Dick
“In this world, shipmates, sin that pays its way can travel freely, and without a passport; whereas Virtue, if a pauper, is stopped at all frontiers.”
Thanks for that! I read that book three times. Its one of my favorites. Subtle scriptural allusions permeate that whole novel.
