Saint Agnes has been greatly revered by Catholics from early times; she one of the saints who is commemorated by name in the mass. She was betrayed to the pagan authorities by enraged suiters as a Christian after she rejected them. Her bones are kept under the high altar in a church in Rome.
I knew I had read this story earlier and then I remembered it was from the Office of Readings from the LOTH on her feast day, Jan 21.
