A family member who wanted his property was ready to denounce him for being a Christian, so he went into the desert to hide. But he found he loved a life of solitude in prayer there, and he stayed there… His relative’s desire to strike him down became a great blessing for his life.
He became the first Christian hermit of all, in the 200s. The great Saint Anthony, the founder of monasticism, learned from God that there was someone who lived even earlier than himself in this life, and, searching for him in the desert, found Saint Paul, than over a hundred years old. But St. Anthony found him, a man who he greatly appreciated for his holiness, days before he died, and so Saint Anthony buried him, in events obviously arranged by the providence of God.
