These French-born missionaries came to live in what in the 17th century was a wilderness, among the Huron and Iroquois American Indian tribes, in what would become New York and Ontario. They would sacrifice their lives for the souls of the Indians they came to save, well knowing what what price they could pay. At last, after years of labor and converting thousands, they were killed, some after being terribly tortured.

October 19th in the US.

We already celebrated it on September 26th in Canada, and with the rank of Feast.
 
I’m sorry for this error; my sources said October 19 and unfortunately failed to mention the date when they are honored in Canada.
 
A friend and I will be going up to the Shrine of the North American Martyrs in upstate New York on Saturday to see the site where Jogues, Lalande, and Goupil were martyred. It’s very interesting, because I attend Fordham University, and these Jesuit priests lend their name to one of our dormitories on campus (I actually lived in Jogues Hall last year!).

Anyway, it should be a very peaceful and wonderful experience to visit the Shrine!

I never tire of reading their story of courage and dedication to our Lord Jesus Christ and the Gospel. May these good saints pray for all of us!

I didn’t see this thread until today, but it’s also celebrated on Sep. 26th for U.S. Catholics following the traditional Roman calendar.

Brave, brave souls. For those of you who are readers, I recommend Saints of the American Wilderness by John O’Brien. It is based directly on the journals kept by the Jesuit missionaries.
 
Saint Among Savages: The Life of St. Isaac Jogues, by Francis Talbot is a great read.

He should’ve chosen a different title however. The title turned many away from the book.

My wife and myself went there about 20 years ago and attended Mass there.

It’s an awesome site, but the area itself didn’t have a lot else to do and the restaurants were mostly chain store type, like Denny’s.
