Born in what is now the Czech republic, he was trained to be a priest. But then his bishop said he had enough priests-and no one elsewhere in Europe would ordain him, saying too they had all the priests they needed. But then they did ordain him–in the United States. There the priest no one wanted became, at last, a monumental bishop and was canonized for his holiness as a saint.
