In 1879, these three saints and the image of Christ as a lamb appeared in silence to fifteen people, for hours outside the small parish church of this farming village. Now Knock is the national shrine of Ireland. The Catholic Church has approved this apparition and popes have gone there in honor to this shrine.

Some people have wondered why this silent apparition took place. I think it may have been because the parish priest has just finished 100 masses for the souls in purgatory right before the apparition. Perhaps it was heaven’s way of saying “thank you” to the people of Knock. The testimonies of 15 witnesses can be found on the Knock Shrine’s website. It is far too busy and commercialised for me now. Give me Abbey Isle at dawn, or Clonmacnoise before the coach tours arrive or any of the ancient ruins .
