What a difficult time to be a Christian! How brave they were!

My pastor talked about this at Mass this morning. He asked if we could imagine the utter lack of compassion one must have had to sit and eat at a banquet while humans were burned to provide table light. It turns the stomach that people could take delight in the death and suffering of others; the utter lack of humanity that can allow someone to standby and turn a blind eye. Despite that we still have millions that do just that in the name of freedom of choice.

May we all remember today that the seeds of the Church were watered by the blood of the Martyrs. May those people torn to pieces pray for us that we may be forgiven our own barbarous acts.
 
nero barely knew who or what the christians were; but rome was in deep economic trouble so he may have been looking for a scapegoat

In the summer of 64, Rome suffered a terrible fire that burned for six days and seven nights consuming almost three quarters of the city. The people accused the Emperor Nero for the devastation claiming he set the fire for his own amusement. In order to deflect these accusations and placate the people, Nero laid blame for the fire on the Christians.
