The first Korean Catholics were intellectuals who became Christian through books coming in from abroad. When the first priest came to Korea in 1794, he found 4,000 Catholics who had never seen a priest. During the next hundred years there was wave after wave of terrible persecution so that there were 10,000 martyrs–now Korea has the fourth number of saints of any country. These martyrs are the spiritual ancestors of 5 million Catholic Koreans today, 10% of the country’s population. Are the prayers from heaven of the martyrs of Korea a great reason why the Church in Korea is doing so well? The story of the Korean martyrs, linked below, was given by Pope John Paul II when he canonized, in Korea, the 103 Korean martyrs whose martyrdom is remembered on this feastday.
