This article records their martyrdom. The days of their death were a terrible and marvelous. Marvelous because of their courage and faith. The great African shrine is the Uganda Martyrs Shrine; on their feast day which just occurred, on June 3, a million pilgrims came, some walking hundreds of miles from neighboring countries. These martyrs manifest that the blood of martyrs is the seed of the Church, their martyrdom in the 19th Century shares responsibility for the fact the faith has spread marvelously since then in Africa. Almost half the people of Uganda now are Catholics; and while there were 1.9 million Catholics in Africa in 1900, now there are 130 million Catholics in Africa.
