The Stumbling Block for the Protestants

In his letter to the Corinthians, St Paul talks of the message about the Crucified Christ, as being a stumbling block for the Jews and Greeks, from accepting the Christian faith. ( 1 Cornthians 1:18-24).
Similarly, honouring (Luke 1:48-49) the Holy Mother of God (Luke 1:41-43) and acknowledging the power of the intercession (John 2:3-5, Acts 1:14) of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a stumbling block for the Protestants, from accepting the Catholic faith.

Though many Protestants debate that Mary should not be given too much prominence in the Chruch, none can deny that she played a prominent role in accomplishing the salvation plan of the heavenly Father.

Just as Eve believed and received Satan’s words and consequently disobeyed God and brought sin upon mankind, Mary, the New Eve believed and received God’s words through the angel Gabriel and consequently cooperated with God’s salvation plan through her complete surrender and obedience.

you may not want to use this one, his appearing.

I don’t understand what your objection is. It seems to me this is a good quote to use for those who object to the idea of Mary being crowned Queen of Heaven, or Catholic customs of crowning statues of Mary, or that sort of thing. It doesn’t address statues of course or the unique queenship of Mary, but it does help establish the idea of the saints in heaven being crowned.

I appreciate what you saying, some Catholics for some reason deny worshipping and addressing prayers to Mary. I agree with you.

Protestants say its not biblically sound and errant and they have numerous bible verses to back that up.

Sure, but if you have a Protestant who thinks crowning Mary is inherently pagan, that it implies worship of her or something, the verse can be useful in showing that the general idea of the corronation of a creature in heaven is Biblical and does not imply any kind of competition with the honor due to God.

Oh I see, I don’t know whats in the Bible about praying or worshipping Mary, but she is the Mother of God and deserves honor for all Christians I would think. I know how important my Mother was to me, so Mary must be real important to Jesus.

What most protestants miss is that Jesus is on the throne of David. The throne of David also had a throne for the Queen Mother. Once you point that out, many of them go silent. Others just ignore it and say, Oh that was the old throne… the new throne doesn’t have that. Yet I don’t see any evidence in the bible that it was ever removed? In fact, all types are better than the old one… So if the old one had a throne for the mother, wouldn’t it be less than the new if the new one had not one?

Whenever Protestants make such a comment to me (i.e., that Catholics honor Mary too much), I ask them, “Then tell me how much is enough. In other words, answer me this: what does the congregation in your own church do to honor Mary?”

I have yet to get a straight answer to this question. As a former Protestant, I can tell you that the concept of honoring Mary for many Protestants means getting a school girl to dress up like her once a year for the Christmas pageant, and then completely ignoring her until the next Christmas pageant rolls around.

Instead of being concerned that Catholics do “too much” to honor Mary, maybe they should be more concerned about how they do too little.

The Queen’s throne was not removed. It is there for all eternity.

A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth. … She gave birth to a son, a male child, destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod. Her child was caught up to God and his throne. (Revelation 12:1-2,5)

Mary in Heaven wearing a crown is explicit in scripture.

Revelation 12:17 also says explicity that we are Mary’s offspring.
