Nope. Not really. Maybe a few people here and there by soldiers, but in general no.

There were not enough Spanish in Latin America to force conversions.

The MAJORITY of the conversions in Latin America happened due to Our Lady of Guadeloupe. Word of Our Lady of Guadeloupe didn’t just convert Mexico, but converted natives all over South America too.

Plus, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand were very devout Catholics. Queen Isabella has been granted the title of “Servant of God,” obedience to the Church was very important to her.

And honestly, the Spanish in Latin America were more obsessed with fighting among themselves than focused on forced conversions. The Spanish in Mexico alone attempted to assassinate the local Bishop and the governor 2 years before Our Lady of Guadeloupe appeared. The local Bishop sent a letter to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella staying that unless God interceded, that the new land was going to be morally lost. In answer to that prayer, Jesus sent his Blessed Mother.

Wow dude.

How about studying some history from Msgr. Eduardo Chávez.

Msgr. Eduardo Chávez Sánchez is co-founder and rector of the Institute for Guadalupan Studies, and is a canon of the Basilica of Guadalupe. Born in Mexico City, he studied philosophy and theology in the Institute for Ecclesiastical Studies at Mexico’s Conciliar Seminary. He was ordained on Aug. 15, 1981, in the Archdiocese of Mexico. He holds a diploma in philosophy from the Universidad del Valle de Atemajac in Guadalajara and, a doctorate in Church history from the Pontifical Gregorian University.

On May 17, 2001, Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera, Archbishop of Mexico, appointed him postulator for the cause of Saint Juan Diego, who was canonized on July 31, 2002. Msgr. Chávez was also general secretary for Pope John Paul II’s visit to Mexico. Msgr. Chávez has made many contributions to the study of the Guadalupan event, addressing major academic institutions internationally and publishing more than 28 books and articles.

Because Msgr Chavez was the postulator of the cause of St. Juan Diego, he had become extremely familiar with the facts surrounding the appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

I’ve attended a 5 hour lecture with Msgr. Chavez when he was visiting the United States this year. The history of the Spanish in the America is extremely tainted by English propaganda against the Spanish (who were essentially in a “cold war” with each other).

Go back and study the documents or listen to experts on that specific history. Don’t listen to Protestant hacks from 17th, 18th & 19th century England.

He was also a producer of the film “Guadalupe - The Miracle and the Message”

Well… obviously if people don’t believe that Our Lady of Guadeloupe helped with conversions of millions, then you are going to look at forced conversions.

HOWEVER, let’s remember… I did said the MAJORITY.

I said that some soldiers did do this. Also, some secular politicians did this too.

But is was NOT the Catholic Church. The Church did not say convert or die. Some Spanish and Portuguese conquistadors did. But not the Catholic Church.

Some conquistadors were faithful Catholics and others were not.

There is a big difference between Catholic lay people (or even some clergy) doing bad things vs. it being a sanctioned action by the Catholic Church.

BTW - the New York Times has a history of misrepresenting the Catholic Church. And President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela is hardly a reliable source.

Plus, Christianity is thriving in Asia, Africa and South America. God knows what He is doing.
The odd thing is in China, some Communists are exploring the idea of fusing Christianity and allegiance to the State as one way of combatting greed and consumerism that they see as a *Western *import. Unlike the West, the Communists in China are smart enough to be frightened by the effects of mindless consumerism and selfishness. They show greater concern for the future of their citizens than our politicians in the West. In no way am I endorsing terrible actions of authoritarians such as persecution and etc., just pointing out how stupid our politicians and influential celebrities are.

Rod Dreher quotes UK journalist Douglas Muray, a gay atheist conservative, on the future of Europe:

“I mean that the civilisation we know as Europe is in the process of committing suicide, and that neither Britain nor any other western European country can avoid that fate, because we all appear to suffer from the same symptoms and maladies.

As a result, by the end of the lifespans of most people currently alive, Europe will not be Europe and the peoples of Europe will have lost the only place in the world we had to call home.

Europe today has little desire to reproduce itself, fight for itself or even take its own side in an argument. Those in power seem persuaded that it would not matter if the people and culture of Europe were lost to the world.”Dreher notes that the United States is following the European model on a slightly lagging timeline. He goes on to note:

Murray’s point, though, is that the European elites (and, it seems to me, the masses) don’t care. They consider themselves virtuous in sending Christianity into history’s dustbin. What they don’t comprehend is that in so doing, they are cutting their own national throats as people who presumably would like to preserve liberal democracy. You cannot march confidently and coherently into the future feeding yourself on the thin gruel of “diversity.”

So the consensus of both Mr. Muray and Rod Dreher is that the west is headed for a fate quite similar to the fall of Rome in 476, with the exception that this time, the Church itself is not in a position to help, having been itself discarded by the dying western civilization.

I put this link in Popular Media since Douglas Muray has just published a book on the matter, titled “The Strange Death of Europe.”

Somehow I doubt that the book will have much impact, precisely because people in a dying civilization do not care.

Sadly he is right. We live in a world were people have become selfcentred (thanks to social media, selfies etc) Godless (most of the young people I know don’t even believe God exists and mock the Catholic faith).
When will it all end?
Will anyone still believe in God when Jesus returns??

Western Europe was blessed when its various tribes submitted to the Vicar of Jesus Christ and became Catholic.

Western Europe later tried to shrug off the Vicar, and then even the King.

The result was the Thirty Years War, deism, the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, atheism, World War I, World War II, existentialism and postmodernism.

Hopefully we will soon see the error of our ways and come running home to our merciful King and His Vicar.
That is what I pray for not only for Europe but for the whole world.

Yes because only white people can be catholics. How dare those impure middle eastern dare even speak of europe. They need to stay in the shithole that we call the middle east. Jesus was a white european alpha male. The previous sentences summarizes the hateful rhetoric that you guys just spoke and in no way relflects my beliefs. After reading that, do you now realize how stupid and selfish you sound.
Calm down.

No one ever said anything about being white as a requirement for being Catholic.

Actually, I take what I said above back. Someone did mention it. You.

Not trying to gang up on you since I appreciate the kind tone you are bringing to this xenophobic thread, but it is worth considering that the Roman Empire was just about finished in 380. The Visigoths sacked Rome just 30 years later, and the western Empire was gone completely within 100 years. BUT, the Holy Roman Pontiff was such as blessed man that he quickly went to work converting the Arian tribes of Europe one by one, all peacefully and without force … he couldn’t use force since they had huge armies and he did not.

As for the rest of the thread, Christians should be rejoicing that Muslims are becoming our neighbors and we can now convert them face to face … just like all the above mentioned barbarian tribes were converted.

Plus, Christianity is thriving in Asia, Africa and South America. God knows what He is doing.
I have a suggestion for all of us here in this thread, myself included.

Let us all pray the rosary for conversion of Muslims to Christianity.

Something or someone tells me that Our Lady will be the key to these conversions.

I agree 100%. The fact that she appeared at Fatima and appeared to Juan Diego as “Our Lady of Guadalupe” is very telling.

Fatima (a city in Portugal) was named by the Moors after the daughter of Muhammad. Fatima was her name.

And Guadalupe is an arabic word. The Spanish did not select the work “Guadalupe” for this apparition and actually tried to squash it… they didn’t want “Guadalupe” in the Marian title because it wasn’t Spanish. But Mary requested that she be called “Santa Maria de Guadalupe”

Not to mention Muslims already respect and honor Mary.

So yes, I agree 100%… Our Blessed Mother will be key to the conversion of Islam.

Simple truth is that Europe has turned away from GOD and so will reap the benefits of the loss of individualism and freedom they too for granted. They mere replace one religion with another. Either the cult of self gratification or or the globalist/ communist totalitarian model. Government is all to many and supposed can solve all problems if allowed to. What they forget is that government is run by humans who are weak and can be petty or greedy so buracracy takes over and nothing is solved. Just my take.
