The sung Our Father

As you are all aware, the original chanted “Our Father”, is the same as what is used in Rome. Now, there is a rather modern English charismatic version which is very popular with the Filipino communities (in English). It has the same words, but there is an awful insertion of the sound “oooh” immediately after "as we forgive those who trespass against us, oooh. It appears again at the end “but deliver us from evil” oooh.

I’m just wandering, if anybody knows it’s origin?

Entrance & Communion Antiphons, Gloria, Sanctus, The Creed, Our Father. The whole Mass is a prayer, and it is meant to be sung.

Yes, but only at my local Eastern Catholic Church. I don’t think I’ve ever heard it in an RC parish. I have some Gregorian chant settings for it that are quite nice.

I’m not sure why RC parishes don’t do it? Time constraints? Inability? 🤷

We sing the Creed, too, at our Roman Catholic Church. And now, with the new translations we sing it in more of a chant form. It sounds like we are singing the English with the same melody as we used to sing the Latin decades ago.
 
I have no problem at all with prayers in song as long as it’s reverent such as THIS one sung in the Orthodox Church youtube.com/watch?v=7gvc1TU0HyY

Someone mentioned that the Mass is meant to be sung and I agree… chanted or sung is beautiful and reverent (barring “baptist revival” meetings 😉 )

We sing the Our Father in our Church, not as beautifully as above, and with no extra ooohs and ahhhs, it’s very reverently done. I’ve been to other Churches who sing it also, and they do a “fun type” song/prayer… that’s a fail IMO.

Oye, I actually was searching for my parish’s “Our Father” and found our little church on You Tube! Problem was it was 2 video’s of the Charismatic renewal… LOL! (NOT what I would consider showing here)

Not only is singing the creed proper…

It will be a way for people to learn the new words. Most people learn and remember words more efficiently if there is a “melody” associated with them.

I’m sure all the monks and nuns in the world will react charitably at your suggestion that they stop singing prayers, and then happily continue to do so as they have for many centuries.

The new Missal’s song structures have become so complicated in the prayers we sing that people have simply stopped singing.

But…the choir seems enthusiastic. Good for those 8 people.

Singing the Our Father and the Creed would go over like a lead balloon at our parish.

There is nothing wrong with singing it, but we are not to be adding words or extra sounds to it.

It’s like when Hosanna is sung, “God of power, God of might” is NOT correct. It is “God of power and might”

What do you mean? Are you saying that the mass ordinaries your parish picked are difficult? The actual music in the missal is quite simple. For example:

Glory to God

Yes, what they picked is difficult to sing with the leader (most people are only willing to embarass themselves singing off key and out of pitch a couple of times a song).

Honestly, it’s as if the choir took the new Missal as an opportunity to “show off” their musical ability and left the lay people in the pew to listen to them sing.

Your Glory to God is beautiful and easy to learn.

Actually, as of two weeks from now it neither of those; it’s “Lord God of Hosts.”
