This is was sent out to a Catholic group that I am apart of and would love some feedback.
I know that the miraculous is also found in other denominations, but I am talking about big “M” miracles that are found in Catholicism, from Lourdes, Fatima, to the miracles needed for a cause of canonization (that are rigorously investigated by both Catholics and non-Catholics medical experts)

Would love some feedback from our Non-Catholic friends here about what kinds of “signs and wonders”, the miraculous that is seen in their faith traditions.

We know that what separated Christ from the others who claimed that they were the Messiah of His time, was the miraculous. The healing, the walking on water etc etc. His claiming He was the Anointed One was not unique. What was unique were the signs that followed Him.

The Eastern Orthodox as well as other Eastern Churches have incredible witnesses to thousands of miracles that are in the same light as miracles in the Church of Rome. Perhaps most of the Catholic Church is unaware of these miracles. This can be said of the Eastern Orthodox who are unaware of the many miracles coming from the Roman Catholic Church. The point though is both Churches have claim to incredible miracles. The problem though is we will not discover those miracles which the other Church can share with us. If miracles is to be a true mark of the Church than include the Eastern Orthodox and the rest of the Eastern Churches because there is plenty for everyone to discover. We need to discover that God indeed works with great faith from both sources of East and West in what we call 1st class miracles.

I am unaware of the miracles in the Eastern Orthodox Church. I would assume they involve saints? Would you list a couple of the miracles - I would love to hear about them!

Thanks so much, Chimo!. No I didn’t know that miracles abound in the Orthodox and other eastern Church, but so not surprised. In my view, even though I know that there are some serious doctrinal issues, I do see Rome and Orthodox as two lungs of the same Body. 🙂

Thank you for your interest! I will give to you two of my favorite Orthodox saints, St. Seraphim of Sarov, a Russian Orthodox saint and St. Paisios the Athonite, a Greek Orthodox saint. St. Seraphim of Russia is considered to be the Francis of Assisi of the Orthodox Church. A great saint whose story must someday be made into a movie. St. Seraphim was born in 1759 in Kursk, Russia. He decided to try to come closer to the Lord when as a monk he would sit on a rock for practically 1000 days and nights taking with him the necessary food and other requirements to accomplish this ascetic exercise. This saint caught the attention of the devil who tried to scare this saint from accomplishing his goal to become more united with Jesus Christ. Thousands of thoughts bombarded the saint’s mind but the saint would not get off the rock. Finally the devil had given up in his attempts to frightened the young monk so he decided on another tactic. Disguised as an old man he told two robbers of a great fortune up there in a cave where St. Seraphim was staying at. The two left for the cave and saw the Saint near where they thought was the treasure. Seraphim could have defended himself but he thought of Christ’s unwillingness to defend Himself so he let the two robbers beat him. When they looked in the box all they found was some food. They realised they had beaten up a saint and they quickly ran away. The monks found St. Seraphim and brought him to the monastery. Fearing Searphim would die the saint had a vision of the Mother of God who was with the Apostles Peter and John. She looked at the saint and said “He is one of us” and with a large stick hit Seraphim where he was injured. The saint became healed but he did have a small limp throughout the rest of his life. The rest of his story was full of incredible miracles as he became the great spiritual Father for Russia. Look him up on the internet.
St. Paisios of Greece is a recent saint who has resposed in 1994. I had chosen this saint as one of my patrons because I am also Greek Orthodox. One of his recent miracles after his death (there are countless more) involved the coach of a national football (soccer) team whose wife was seriously sick in a coma. A friend had asked him to go the grave of the saint to ask for healing. The coach could not leave his wife’s side so the friend decided to go to the grave of the saint and returned back with some soil from the grave. The coach then decided to mix the soil with wax and made the sign of the cross with the mixture on his wife’s hand and the sick woman who was in a very serious coma opened her eyes, kissed the cross and became fully recovered. This saint was a member of the monks of Mount Athos which is often called the Holy Mountain because of the many holy saints that these monasteries had. The Holy Mother of God is the founder and Protector of this great monastic republic and is the only woman allowed on the Mountain. Once a man wanted to go to Confession to a priest on the Holy Mountain but it seemed to be too long of a wait so he decided to leave. He was interrupted by a woman who said to stay for it would not be too long now. He did stay and relayed the story to the priest wondering how a woman was there in the Church. The priest said to him that it must be the Panagia, the Holy Mother for she often does this for us. Look up Mount Athos and her saints especially the most recent one St. Paisios the Athonite on the Internet.

Thank you for this is what Pope John Paul II had said about the Eastern Church that our Lord breathes through both His lungs. I believe this is where you had received this from. Pope John Paul II was a great saint. A chair that was built for him when he came to Canada in 1984 is now part of the Orthodox Church that I worship at. The Church in Nova Scotia decided to give it to us so it is incredible that a relic of one of my idols is a part of my Church. If you read my last post you can get a glimpse of some of the saints of the Orthodox Church.

And the miracle of the holy fire!

Archbishop Dmitri of Dallas was found to be incorrupt last week. His body was disinterred on Friday to be transferred into a tomb in St. Seraphim Orthodox Cathedral. When cemetery personnel opened his coffin, he was found incorrupt. Archbishop Dmitri died in 2011 and was buried unembalmed according to Orthodox tradition. The writer of this article is a parishioner at St. Seraphim’s.

Yes thank you for bringing this up. A saint is one who will always offer mercy. St. Elizabeth of Russia has a great story to tell us and I am glad you have chosen her for she was another Saint that can be seen as an incredible witness that saints are famous for. If I remembered she was the grand-daughter of Queen Victoria, German and Lutheran in origin but had chosen the faith of her husband who was Russian Orthodox. An excellent Saint for young girls to choose from. Thanks Dorothy for bringing up the Holy Fire. I did not know about the Holy Fire until recently. It is an event we all can come to know since it involves the Lord’s Resurrection. I hope the Archbishop Dimtri will be canonized soon as a saint. It will be wonderful to have a another Saint here in the Americas from the Orthodox Church.
