The supposed "Great Apostacy"

I’m not sure how these verses tie Christ to the Trinity (including verses for clarity)

1 John 4 (KJV)

1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

Latter-day Saints confess that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. Based on my understanding of the Trinity, the conditions laid out in these verses are met by both the LDS view of the Godhead and the Orthodox Christian doctrine of the Trinity. My $0.02 worth…

LDS doctrine is that God and man have existed since the beginning.

It sounds like the Mormon conception of God is of an un-necessary being! So the universe could get along fine without God (“our” God), since there are other Gods that can handle things, and were doing so before our God became God and could do so if our God were not God. Since any individual god or set of gods - and by extension the entire category of gods and goddesses - are unnecessary - I wonder what Mormons think is the necessary thing brings these unnecessary, contingent beings into existence, makes it possible for them to relate and procreate, and keeps prevents these contingent beings from switching into non-existent beings.

It warms my heart to see all these former Mormons making their way to a more traditional form of Christianity. After years of study I have finally began to make my way into the Orthodox Christian faith, but I definitely see the RCC as a better alternative to Mormonism.

I don’t know that Joseph Smith set out to imitate that Catholic Church. I do think in many ways he did do just that. LDS apologists love to make a connection between the LDS church, Judaism and early Christianity. Even when I was a True Believing Mormon, I knew deep down that either the LDS church was God’s true church or it was the Catholic Church. So when I finally realized that Joseph Smith was a false prophet, I knew I had to go to the Catholic Church. So here I am in RCIA and absolutely loving it. The Catholic Church is what I have been wanting and searching for my whole life. The Mass is exactly what my soul had been craving in temple worship but never had.

I am always happy to see ex Mormons find their way to God. It ain’t easy. Fortunately, I reasoned my way to the existence of God in high school; however I stayed in Mormonism because I was raised in it. I am so grateful I finally followed the Holy Spirit out and found my way to the Catholic Church. So many ex Mormons, at least the ones raised in the LDS church, become agnostic or atheist upon leaving. It is very sad.

My wife and I told our family in July that we were done with the Mormon church, and a few weeks later I met with our Bishop to let him know we weren’t coming back. After we left and began discussing what to do next, my wife and I admitted to each other that we both have had a life-long draw to the Catholic Church. Um, that made things really easy.

We are now in RCIA and our oldest (8 years) is enrolled in religious education. We have been attending Mass every week since leaving, and the peace and holiness I feel there is every bit as good or better than when I was actively attending the temple. The best part is that I don’t have need to carry a card to prove my worthiness and show that I’m caught up with membership dues.

With faith and hope in God, we plan to enter into full communion with the RCC Easter 2014.

Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if Joseph Smith and L Ron Hubbard and Ellen G White and Charles Russell and John Thomas (obscure I know but not to me) had been introduced to each other in an informal context, sat themselves down around a table, and asked to articulate religion. I sometimes wonder what that religion they created would look like.
