The Supposed Superiority of the Douay-Rheims (Challoner) Version of the Bible?

I found this online book by TAN books called “Which Bible Should You Read?” by Thomas A. Nelson and it seems to make a lot of sense but then there is this article by Catholic Culture.org. I’m confused. What is the truth? Is the Douay-Rheims the best Bible to read or would it be some other Bible?

The Challoner version has almost no notes. That’s why I feel the D-R with the Haydock Commentary is far better. I have both but just use the Haydock one.

Your second article is a well-balanced presentation. Douay-Rheims Onlyists like the DR because it is OLD and sounds BIBLICAL. They try to transfer to it the dignity of the Vulgate, but it is not the Vulgate and does not have the qualities of the Vulgate. And it remains a translation of a translation.

If you find the DR helps you get more spiritual benefit than other traslations, by all means use it. The best bible is the bible you read. If you want a good translation done from the original texts, then go to the New Revised Standard version, Catholic edition.

I don’t think that the D-R Challoner is superior, but it has a lot of benefits. The Douay-Rheims itself is only translation that I trust 100%. Some newer translations however are nice to read and include inclusive language. The NRSV and NAB have the most I believe. The older NAB doesn’t have as much inclusive language. Just stick with one that you feel comfortable with
