I. THE OUTER COURT – congregation/offerings
Once you entered the Gate, Door, or Way you faced the Brazen Alter. The tabernacle, the sacrifices, and the furniture all pointed to our Lord and God’s plan to redeem his people and dwell with them.
The Brazen Alter and The Laver = “Let us draw near to God with sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled [with blood] to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.” Heb 10:22
II. THE HOLY PLACE – fellowship (brotherly kindness)
The items here were figures of fellowship between our Lord and his people. The Priest performed their services here. We are also kings and priests through our inheritance (1 Pet. 2:5 & 9). The lamp stand provided light so that the Priests were not in darkness. We are the light of the world, Christ is our light and branch.
This is the area the High Priest went alone annually to commune with God. The word commune is a common bond under one common authority being God himself. In the Holy of Holies were three items covered by a Golden Box representing God’s mercy with two cherubim’s facing each other. The three items were reminders of Israel’s rebellion against God in spite of his provision and deliverance. They were covered as an indication of God’s mercy covering the sins of Israel and the way being guarded by his angels… the same as they guarded the Garden of Eden.
b. Aaron’s rod that budded… Israel’s rejections of God’s Priest and wanting to make their own. God showed his choice by making Aaron’s rod bud.
c. Tables of Stone… Israel’s rejection of God’s commandments.
Summary – The tabernacle was a visible creation showing God’s redemptive plan for his people as outlined in scripture. It showed that the visible things of God were clearly seen being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead. Therefore whatever you believe must be supported by scripture and scripture is supported visibly by the tabernacle. (Rom 1:20 and Heb ch.8)
