OMGosh, the more I watch it the sicker I get. 😦 I watched it for as long as I could–I wanted to know more about the Prosperity Gospel cult-like message that I read about on these forums–before I had to shut it off in disgust.

And WOW, is it just sickening. I can’t even explain it–half the time, these “preachers” were talking such circular gobbledegook that it didn’t even make sense. They wax on about how God loves to reward you with houses, riches, lands (that was on just a few minutes ago, coming from that guy with the red tie and toupee’), and all such non-sense, perverting whatever teensy little Scripture will support their belief that GOD is telling them that second that if you give during their “anointed” prophesying you’ll be rewarded beyond your wildest dreams.

How despairing and despondent. . . and ANGRY!. . . this thing makes me. How these hucksters say “Sow your love seed of $25, $250, $2500, $25,000 and watch God give it back a hundredfold!” and all other drek, sucking people in by perverting God and anything to do with Him. . . it literally makes my stomach turn.

I know I should pray about it–and trust me, I will–but how these shysters so blatantly rape Scripture and anything else for their own gain. . . God help them.
 
I know. The notion that if you “give beyond your tithe” you will “get it back a hundredfold” in the near future leads to some strange expectations:
You find a dollar. Having no income, you tithe a dime and give a penny. You then find another dollar (a reward for your tithe) and another dollar (for your penny). You tithe twenty cents and give a dime. The next week (period between tithing opportunities) you find two bucks and another tenner. You tithe a dollar twenty and give, say, fifty cents. You then get one-twenty and fifty bucks – $51.20. Maybe this time you have a job and you earn it. You tithe $5.12 and give three bucks. Your income next week is $351.20. You tithe $35.12 and give a hundred fifty. You now earn $15,351.20 in a week. Is that the experience of most people who keep giving their money to the prosperity preachers?
 
Someone needs to explain to these guys the definition of tithing in the first place. You can give all of your money away to a rich, corrupt individual and call it anything you want, but it is in no way tithing. You tithe by giving to the poor and needy, that’s it, if you tithe to the church and the church squanders it, it made your tithe useless, if you tithe expecting a return, you are not tithing, you are investing.

The main reason I don’t watch televangalists is because they sneakily place their messages and lies between the truth. You are sitting along, even inspired, learning things and enjoying a sermon or teaching, then out of the blue, they slip in elements that are utterly their own agenda, many of which even contradict the word itself and the very thing they are supposed to be teaching in the first place. Case in point here, with the prosperity message, they forgot to mention the requirements to actually prosper, they completely missed the boat in the message, and replaced it with the usual tithe guilt approach.

Bottom line, even if the only thing they vocalized was the word itself, by only showing part of it, and not the whole story, they have perverted it and turned it into a lie. Anybody can splice the bible and after enough cutting and pasting, make it appear to mean anything they want, it doesn’t make it true, yet, the words did “technically” come from the bible.

You’re welcome to join me and listen to LDS general conference. It won’t make you sick, but it’ll probably put you to sleep.

The Mormon Church owes the fine people that run this site the credit for keeping me awake during the experience. I think this is the first time I’ve made it through an entire session conscious, and it’s largely due to the lively discussion the Catholics and Muslims have provided here. LOL!
 
Yeah! It is sickening, isn’t it Your First responablity is to support your own Church.

I cannot help but be fascinated by TBN - robably because my grandmother has sent thousands and thousands of dollars to the network and believes every word that comes out of their mouths. It’s transfixing to watch sometimes, really. They seem to have weekly telethons, don’t they?
 
I was watching the one televangelist say that she gave $20, 000 to TBN and the guy from TBN said that her donation made it possible to bring TBN to some country because it paid for some equipment or something in some country. She started crying because her donation made it happen. Then i thought to myself, that wasn’t even her money she gave. It was the money that the people of her church gave to her and then she gave it to TBN. It wasn’t like that $20, 000 came out of her pocket.

Can someone explain to me how these charlatans attracts so many people to give them their money and they do it?
 
The stuff of Richard Dawkins, Chris Hitchens and Sam Harris nightmares.

It’s ez, I almost wanted to run an experiement to show how the process works, but I’d be having to dupe innocent people and play with their emotions in order to do so.

It’s a combination of visual and audio stimuli, the human mind can be quite maluable, this is why some very bright, devoted individuals get involved in cults. They have a working system in place that they have fine tuned, this is based upon years of practice and research. It’s strictly business to them, and when they get the desired results, they follow that formula, fine tuning it to enhance them.

Look at all of the leaders that managed to grab power, the bulk of the time, it was through their words alone and how they carried themselves. Even the most sinister ones are devoutly followed, partially due to peer pressure and partially because they know how to play into people’s emotions. I’ll take an example, I had this ministers wife try to play this game on me, for she was trying to dominate the converstation and this has happened quite often.

When you address someone and you want them to do your will, or grab their attention, or make what you say drive home to them personally. Say their name several times during the conversation, I believe that was taken out of the book, “the art of manipulation” I haven’t read the book, but I recall somewhere long ago, someone mentioning it’s a tactic that’s used from it. She didn’t like the fact, I threw it right back in her face, saying her name several times through the conversation, she realized at that point, I knew exactly what game she was playing and that her tactics were not going to work on me.

With the televangelists, it’s worse since they are able to take the bible, of which the listeners already hold dear to their hearts, and manipulate their feelings for it, for God, and make themselves appear to be firmly standing behind it, speaking of great truths, yet people don’t notice the lies that are shoved between these truths, they just accept them. This is one of the main reason Jehova Whitnesses are so successful, they use the same tactics, and since the bulk of these guys don’t even read a real bible, they accept what they are told as truth even though it’s an out right lie.

Exactly, not to mention your aged parents and other members of your family who are in need.

There is a principle that is fundamental to Catholicism, which states that all social action should be done at the lowest possible level of society. This means that welfare programs should be run by the local community rather than the federal government, and that donations should be made to your local parish rather than to somebody on tv. What can be done within the family should be done within the family. If this is not possible, then it should be done by the local community (esp. church community), and so on with the federal govt as a last resort.

The principle behind the principle is that social action, including tithing and supporting the poor, should involve as much interpersonal sharing and communication as possible. Because God wants us to live in intimate community with one another, He wants us involved with each other in giving and in holiness.

The principle has a big long name, but I can’t remember it right now. Anyone know the word?

I’ve been trying to get that message to my relatives for as long as I can remember, they all reject it, I guess that’s why I’m the last that supports the church, also, I live far away from any of them, knowing I can not get through to them no matter how hard I try.

Don’t you think our world would be so much better if all people could embrace those ideals, how much of a change it would be, would be imeasurable.

The word is ‘subsidiarity’. See JPII’s encyclical “Centesimus Annus” for an application of the concept.

Life goes on just fine without TV doesn’t it, take note, you don’t have those stupid commecials running through your head all day as well. I rarely turn my TV on any more, it wasn’t a choice I made in regards to the spiritual arena, I just got fed up with the garbage it was spewing forth, and you know what they say, garbage in, garbage out.

I’m also being much more constructive and do spend more time on the computer, of which, I have total control over what I allow myself to be exposed to, more people should follow our lead, life goes on quite nicely without TV, if you have not tried it, you should some time, your eyes will be open.

I tend to have the babbling one-eyed oaf on a lot, but mostly just for background noise–I hardly ever even pay attention (except for Cash Cab and the MythBusters–my guilty pleasures).
