We’re told not to lie.

So why is it that many non-Catholics feel free to propogate lies about the Catholic Church? Do they feel that the ends (to get people to away from the Catholic Church and into a proper Christian church) justify the means?

Related but not the same.

Why do many non-Caholics feel that it’s OK to trash other Christians and their Churches? Why do they feel it’s OK to trash other religions? Apperently they do, or they’re doing it while feeling guilty. 🙂

Catholics can be guilty of this, too. So Catholics, if you trash other religions, how do you justify it?
 
Catholics don’t “trash” other religions. They are secure in their own. What bothers me the most from a non-Catholic is trying to explain something to them that is from Christ or Sacred Tradition etc…and they take it and interpret it their own way. Very frustrating. Show them an apple and they’ll say it’s a pear.
No matter how much you say Christ started the Catholic church, they say something different…🤷
 
Well, most Catholics don’t trash other religions, especially if they are trying hard to practice their religion. And I do think that most nonCatholics as well (some of whom I count as very dear friends) don’t trash other religions either, God bless them!

But there are always a couple of ‘rotten apples’ in any barrel. Also, between the ‘too zealous’ defenders who resort to name-calling on the one side, and the ‘too thin-skinned’ ‘others’ for whom ANYTHING said other than “You are 100% right” is considered to be “you’re trashing my religion”, you’re always going to find somebody accusing somebody else of ‘trash talk.’

And finally, there is the vexed question of those who honestly, and sincerely, think that what they say is true. Even if it’s attacking the Catholic Church, they truly do not think that they are lying. And as opposed to somebody who KNOWS that some of the ‘charges’ they level at the Church are false, but thinks that ‘the end justifies the means’, these honest attackers are the ones who quite often are given the grace to ‘come home to Rome’ when they DO find out that what they thought was true was not really true.
 
What is a lie? Must one know the truth in order to tell a lie? I feel that many people spread what they think is the truth. It turns out to be incorrect. Did they lie? Does one lie on a test if the miss a question, because they said something that was not accurate.

Now, Personally, I feel that there is no excuse for ignorance in today’s information age. People should know the truth before they spread the incorrect information.

I’ve seen people on this forum trash the LDS church. I thought they were Catholics. Maybe I was wrong. At any rate, I’ve seen Catholics IRL trash other religions, so it does happen.

When they’ve been told and shown the truth (in the CCC) and yet they still say that Catholics believe or do this or that, it’s a lie that they’re spreading.
 
To lie implies the direct intention to deceive. In other words, one must know and encourage another to believe in something that one knows is false. I do not think that this is something that one can justly accuse even the most virulent anti-Catholic of without a well-founded reason. Rather, it seems that such individuals have succumbed to the deceptions of the world and that their hearts have been twisted and hardened against the Truth. In this, there is the possibility of invincible ignorance.

As far as Catholics “trashing” the faith of another, we ought to be clear on what is happening here. People who adhere to a faith that is apart from Christ’s Church adhere to a creed that is diminished in its good. To the extent that the Truth has been abandoned, such a creed is trash and pointing out as much is an act of charity.
 
I don’t think it is as much lying as it is simple misunderstanding on both sides. Because reformation happened centuries ago, people alive today are only repeating what they been taught.
This is why we should all listen to one another, learn from one another and love one another if we ever what unity of all Christians.
St. Paul spoke of divisions way back then and it is still today. If we can remember what all have in common, and work from there maybe, just maybe someday there will be a unity in the Church.
Unfotunately instead of talking and discussing what we have in common, we tend to fight and argue about what seperates us.

I will accept this answer. Once someone knows the truth, then to tell otherwise is to lie.
 
framing a question as OP has is not helpful for discussion or debate. far more fruitful would be a specific instance and citation, followed by the question, Why does Preacher X make these statements cited about the Catholic Church?
 
There are three kinds of people on any internet messageboard:
  1. Idiots. These are people who really don’t know anything, aren’t interested in learning anything, and just like to fight. In most cases, internet debate is just a form of masturbation for them.
  2. Fanatics. These are people who have an agenda and a party-line and are incapable of dialog. They’re not idiots, they’re just scared. The world is big and frightening and it is much safer in their little ideological ghetto.
  3. Reasonable people. 'Nuff said.
No single denomination or church or ideological group has the market cornered on any of these three types.

There also doesn’t appear to be any consistent way of avoiding the presence or development of the first two.

I like my question as it is. A general question about lies told about other Christian churches is valid.

If you have an example that you want to discuss in detail, post it here.

You forgot one type.😉
  1. The board police. You know them when you see them. They’re the ones going around picking out posts they don’t like, and posting lists of what’s wrong with other people on the board.
They have a way of killing discussions that are going along fine until they step in, make their comments, and then move on to find more things to be critical about. 🤷
