Greetings!
We have a discussion with a friend regarding Matthew 5:28 (But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.)
My friend says, bringing up wikipedia and dictionaries, and also CCC (va/archive/catechism/p3s2c2a6.htm - paragraph 2380) that “adultery” as a term means exactly infidelity of married persons; and so, as he tries to prove me, an unmarried man is free to look with lust at unmarried woman, and this would not break the words of Christ.
In russian (our native) language, there are two different words for adultery (preljubodejanie) and sex of unmarried persons (fornication - blud), both are mortal sins. I asked him about the Commandment “Thou shall not commit adultery” - would he understand that like unmarried sex is okay? And he tends to say that unmarried union, and lust between unmarried persons, is a sin against chastity, but it does not break the rule set by Christ in Matthew 5:28.
He keeps telling me that “looking with lust is adultery” does not apply to unmarried persons.
I perfectly think that he’s playing word games, and what he says is sophistics… so I need help from english speakers regarding the term “adultery” and understanding this verse!
Many thanks!
