The term "Papist"

I want to see if its offensive to other Catholics in referring to myself as a Papist with Protestants.

I’ve seen it used self-referentially on this site. And, of course, there is the popular Catholic blog called “American Papist.”

However, I am not sure I would want to use it outside the Catholic online community. There is something to be said for irony or even for “reclaiming” a word. However, such tactics are dicey and have the possibility to offend when in uncontrolled social situations. And when using it with non-Catholics, it can cause confusion. I wouldn’t want Protestants to begin using the word because they thought it was an accepted synonym for Catholic.

The way I understand it, the word “Papist” is used as a derogatory term for a Roman Catholic by non Catholics and it is meant to offend. You referring to yourself that way sort of leaves me confused 🙂

You may refer to yourself in whatever way you choose. It is not offensive to me personally.

That said though, I agree with Dale that it is mighty tricky and I don’t recommend it.

In speaking to others, whether Catholic or not, about these matters precision is something to strive for. Martin Luther used “hyperbole” in some of his writings (so we are told) and it has come back to haunt protestants by confusing conversation.

Now if you have a close group of non-catholic Christian friends who call you “papist” and you, in the spirit of freindship, accept it so that you might better teach them the faith, I see no problem with this.
However, to “self identify” as a papist to others, I don’t think is a very good idea.

Papist and Roman Catholic were derogatory terms made by the Anglicans, to easily seperate Catholics that followed their Church and Catholics who followed the Roman Church, or the Pope. (Please keep in mind Anglicans believe that they are Catholics) Roman Catholic is not considered a derogatory term anymore, but Papist is.

In a group of friends, and a funny way of expressing your Catholic? Yes, If i was called a Papist myself? I would find it incredibly offensive, and remember that it is a derogatory term similar to the racist slang used for Black members of the community (you all know which one I’m talking about), I always identify myself as Catholic, if they asked what type of Catholic, I’ll tell them I’m of the Latin-Rite.

Depends who you talk to, call an Eastern Catholic, Roman Catholic, and prepare for the Gates of Hades to open ;), also there are Catholics, like myself, that in certain situations (especially here in the UK) who do find the term Roman Catholic offensive, as it was meant to liken us to the Roman Empire.

You made me laugh with that descriptive term"nasty insult"
I thought an insult was an insult. A nasty one must really hurt:)
No one has ever called me a “Papist.” Should it happen, I would feel bad because my faith, for which many have died, is being slighted.
I always refer to myself proudly as “Roman Catholic”
 
Here in the west of Scotland the term ‘Papist’ is use primarily as an insult. In Glasgow’s sectarian bubble it is even used to describe asupporters of Glasgow Celtic Football Club, even although most of that teams followers wouldn’t know what the inside of a chapel looked like. Unlike some of the rest of you I’ve been called a papist ( normally followed by !******! or "$$^) many times
 
I have just finished reading a biography of Saint Paschal Baylon whose Feast day is tomorrow, June 17. I read that while on a mission to France, Paschal so ardently defended the doctrine of the Real Presence against a Calvinist preacher, it almost cost him his life. A hostile mob had stones thrown at him. He was beaten and called Papist and idol worshipper.
Tough huh 🤷

Yes.

It is a traditional insult for Catholics.
Implying (or even outright stating) that the person in question is the Pope’s loyal Yes-man (or woman). With no real opinions or thoughts of their own.

Adopting the name means adopting everything that goes with it, or at least it seems that way to me.
 
you are all a bunch of papist loving whores who know nothing about god or his holy son jesus christ. all you know is to follow a man who rapes little boys. so not only is he a papist but a gay child molester.
