The term "Syro-Maronite"

Apparently there are some Maronites who are “concerned” when another Maronite dares to use “Syro-Maronite” as an identification. The motivation behind this “concern” intrigues me. What spurs this “concern” is probably fear, but fear of what? Do these people fear the qualifier “Syro” because they fear the Syriac language? Do they fear the ethno-cultural connection? Do they fear any association with anything that even resembles the Orthodox? Or is it that they they fear the re-introduction of authentic tradition in the Maronite Church? Maybe a combination of all four things?

Are you the author of that blog? The post is not written in a very charitable tone; it smacks of being patronizing and the author sounds like they’re venting more than they’re speaking. I would review some of the articles written by the apologists for this website to get a better feel for how to write kindly but firmly.

I don’t get it. Isn’t the name of the church in its traditional liturgical language 'Ito Suryaito Maronayto d’Antiokia (or something similar; sorry, I don’t know Syriac) – the Syriac Maronite Church of Antioch? Even in Arabic you can’t get away from it! Al-kanissa al-Antakiya al-Suryaniya al-Marouniya. It seems (according to Wiki, anyway) that it is only in Latin that this adjective is dropped (they claim it’s called Ecclesia Maronitarum in Latin). Maybe that’s why? Identify as Syriac and it’s like you’re less “Catholic” because to some people that’s a synonym for Roman. Sad.

Hey, at least the Aramean nationalists recognize you guys as Syriac people, even if some of your own people won’t, for whatever reason. And some of the Phalange/Ouwet revivalists are also keen to make the connection, too…boy, isn’t the internet fun?

Seriously, though. You’re Syriac people. It’s sad the amount of denial/loony alternative history you can find regarding the origins of the Maronites when you’ve got a perfectly solid historical and contemporary identity that is uniquely your own that is just sort of…sitting there…disused and abandoned…waiting for its own people to reclaim it. What I mean is: please learn your language before I do.

I’m sure that it’s been said to you before, but Welcome to CAF.

Thanks for your post. I have become a fan of Ignatius (I recently read his Epistles and his Martyrdom), and the See of Antioch. I hope to learn more about the rites of the ancient Church there, and elsewhere in the East.

I hope some day to journey there and visit some of the sites where many of the great Saints of the Church once walked, and hear the echos of the Apostles.

Yes we are a Syriac people, however I am not Maronite.

Well, I’ve heard Maronites describe themselves as “Syro-Maronite”, but I’ve never (that I can recall) heard a fellow Maronite complain about it. So I can’t entirely relate to what you’re talking about.

But having said that, personally I rather like the term “Syro-Maronite”. I think it helps inform people about the fact that the Maronite Catholic Church is a part of the West-Syriac family (or even the larger family of all Syriac Christians).
