Why do these things always seem to come out during Lent and Holy Week? I guess it’s time to get back to some serious spiritual reading to flush out the toxins.

Editorial Reviews:
“'God created man and woman in His image,'a biblical poet reminds us. Deepak Chopra has returned the compliment.” [the arrogance]

"Jesus can’t be contained within stultifying Christian creeds and arid Church traditions that deify him. Yes, he is divine, for Chopra in the sense that he divines a way to Cosmic Consciousness. " [Imagine there’s no country, no religion too]

"The message of Jesus was clear, simple and direct. But within a generation of his passion it was compromised in order to accommodate the widely conflicting views among those who claimed to follow him. " [Mormon conspiracy theory]

“In contrast to a message originally intended to inspire people to the wonders of a world reborn in God, the emphasis nowadays makes it almost impossible to think of Jesus or even Christianity itself except in terms of the suffering savior who died to appease God’s anger against us. The terrible toll this emphasis has exacted on the message is sensitively treated in a most compelling way in this very valuable new work.” [Wimpy ineffective Jesus theory]

I can’t help but think Deepockets is trying to capitalize on the success of Pope Benedict XVI’s book, Jesus of Nazareth.

Deepak Chopra, who has his own brand of Hinduism, makes lots of money drawing people to his brand of spirituality. Its feel good spirituality, where no sacrifice is required. Just do what feels good.

Also he is not a Christian, nor does he understand Christianity as he thinks he does. He has said before on a PBS program, that Gnosticism was the true form of Christianity. Go figure!

Deepak Chopra teaching his ideas of Christianity, would be akin to Pope Benedict teaching distorted things about Hinduism. What do you think the response would be by Hindu’s?.

OK: let us suppose, just for the sake of argument, that the real Jesus is the Jesus of the “Gospel of Thomas”; as is claimed at times. Here are some of those “clear, simple and direct” sayings:

  • Jesus said to his disciples, “Compare me to someone and tell me whom I am like.”
Simon Peter said to him, “You are like a righteous angel.”
Matthew said to him, “You are like a wise philosopher.”
Thomas said to him, “Master, my mouth is completely unable to say whom you are like.”
  • Jesus said, “I am not your teacher. Because you have drunk, you have become drunk from the bubbling spring that I have tended.” And he took him, went out, and told him three things. When Thomas returned to his companions, they asked him, “What did Jesus say to you?”
Thomas said to them, “If I tell you one of the things he told me, you will pick up stones and hurl them at me. A fire will emerge from the stones and burn you up.”
    &
  • Jesus said, “I will give you what no eye has seen and no ear has heard and no hand has touched and what has never risen in the human heart.”
    &
  • Jesus said, “Honorable is the one who came into being before coming into being. If you become my disciples and hear my words, these stones will serve you. For there are five trees in Paradise for you. They do not change, summer or winter, and their leaves do not fall. Whoever knows them will not taste death.”

Now for a snippet from the Gospel:
“Clear, simple and direct” ? It’s a point of view. It is because there are some close parallels between the Gospels & the GT in temper & content that the GT is thought to be early. Be that as it may, neither writing is quite what the words from “The third Jesus” might lead us to expect.
"In contrast to a message originally intended to inspire people to the wonders of a world reborn in God, the emphasis nowadays makes it almost impossible to think of Jesus or even Christianity itself except in terms of the suffering savior who died to appease God’s anger against us.

That nasty man Paul whom everyone loves to hate for “perverting” the “simple gospel of Jesus” (Muslims are not fond of him at all) had a lot to say about being reborn. Why accept the rebirth (nice) & not the atoning death (nasty) ? People cannot accept the nice bits only: if they do that, they need reminding that Jesus has been called a fanatic - & that lots of peole have found Him very off-putting & unattractive. And we adore, not the world, but the God Who is its Saviour & Lord: those who adore the creatures rather than the Creator are hell-bound-idolaters who need to repent of their sin (does Deepak Chopra mention sin, damnation & Hell ? That horrid man Jesus did.)

People can agree in resisting the message of the NT - they contradict one another wildly as to why; they can’t even decide what pseudo-Jesus to put in His place. To trash the NT message implies that it can be known from the NT: so the NT can’t be quite as unreliable as some atheists would have people believe.
The terrible toll this emphasis has exacted on the message is sensitively treated in a most compelling way in this very valuable new work." [Wimpy ineffective Jesus theory]

Valuable as what, though ? We are not told…

I can’t help but think Deepockets is trying to capitalize on the success of Pope Benedict XVI’s book, Jesus of Nazareth.

That whole review is* so* arrogant, one just has to laugh 😃 The nerve !

I’m sure you’re right. What are Deepockets for ? holding the :twocents: 🙂

Yes, good point, funny how these books/movies/articles/amazing archaelogical discoveries always take place during Lent or right before Easter. I came to the forums hoping to find some more info on Mr. Chopra and his new book, since I just learned that he will be speaking at my company in the next couple of days as a lunchtime guest speaker, obviously to promote his new book. Participation is strictly voluntary, thankfully–I think I’ll take a pass. I wont say the name of where of where I work, but it’s initals are A.O.L. To me, this is just more of the same whitewashed moral relativism, packaged with a nice, unoffensive, all inclusive spiritual wrapping. I’m sure Mr. Chopra wont offend anyone this week when he speaks, which is a good thing, since the real Jesus never offended anyone either…oh, wait a minute…😉

Adolph Hitler said “It is great luck for leaders that men do not think.” Obvioulsy, this stands well for leaders of the Church, and as well for many lay people. Yes, OK, we can say we “think” within the closed cannon of the Church, but have you ever stepped out for a moment to see what train you are riding on? Have you ever considered that perhaps the dictum “Know thyself” or “Question your mind” might be valid and useful advice?

I can tell you, as someone who knew enough Roman Catholic theology to baffle some priests, that it is clear to me that many Catholics have not asked themselves some fundamental questions about their faith. It is one thing to practice in conscious awareness. It is another to blindly follow a thought program.

I have read excerpts from Chopra’s book, and all he is asking anyone to do is differentiate between history, mythology, and a meaningful reality. Is that a lot to ask of someone sincerely intrested in “salvation?” Even from my comparatively tiny knowledge of Eastern languages, the nature of translation and witnessing, and of semantics, it is impossible that Jesus could have meant or intended us to believe, never mind act on, some of the things we as Catholics, Protestants, nay, of ANY religion have been asked to swallow.

I strongly recomend that anyone read Gina Cerminara’s handbook for religious sanity. I also urge you to consider the history of the many figures in history and mythology who were said to have been born of a virgin, perform miracles, teach, die ignominiously, and rise on the third day. I belive that if you do the research you will find there are at least16 that pre date Jesus. Should we call those people who followed them Christians or Catholics? Perhaps it would be wise to go back to the original meaning of “catholic,” i.e. “universal,” and start again from there. What is, we might ask ourselves, in fact, not belief, known to be universally true?

The faith was based on someone who was a Son of God. We need to respect that and see through the clouds that the ages have drawn over him, clouds we may have accepted in lieu of a deeper truth. We can, perhaps, use our own heart as a key and a connecton, without discounting the intelligence and ability to reason we were created with. I submit that if one is going to be a practicing Catholic, it is wise to know one’s religion not only from the inside, but from the outside as well. It can be a journey of either self confirmation, or of magnificent discovery. Our choice.

’ The serpent spewed a torrent of water after the woman to sweep her away …But the earth opened her mouth and swallowed up the river …’ Rev.12:15

My God, I believe , I adore ,I trust and I love Thee and beg pardon for those who do not believe , do not adore and do not trust and do not love Thee .

On account of the Infinite Merits of His most Scared Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of thee conversion of poor sinners .

Bl. Jacinta and Francisco, pray for us and thank our bl.Mother , for the The True Light of our God and Father , who alone shows us what Love Is , in a fallen world with its sufferings …

May The Light of His Mercy , through the glory of His Sufferings shine in all hearts , to put out the darkness , to chop off the serpent’s slippery half truths , that brought on such evils as Nazism , with its new age emblem of the broken cross !

St.Thomas, Patron Apostle of India , pray for us and all her children , that every knee would bend and call on His Name - My Lord and My God !

Good way to get some real joy of sharing in the cross of some of the least and to avoid temptation of going after poisoned fruit !

Thank God for Mo.Teresa ; may her prayers and the merits of her own sufferings of being in the midst of the dark forces, free many , to grasp the real meaning of The Cross, and of The Incarnation , of a God with us , in our sufferings, in order to keep us with Him , for eternity !

With regard to the serpent’s lies coming out more during this time of the year, another mysterious reason could be , that it is also the time when the counterfieter also gets called upon more , such as in the festival of Sivan , that is to take place tomorow , in such places like Orissa ( place of the recent such strike of the enemy )

Sivan, as the third person of the counterfiet faith and a tempestuous agent of destruction that has to be pacified , out of fear !

‘Jesus of Nazareth, what have you to do with us !’ - the cry of the demoniac , that still echoes …

And He answers , with all tenderness -’ Be not afraid …’

‘Come to Me, all who are heavy laden and burdened and I will give you rest’ …

Come , O HOly Spirit ,come , through the powerful intercession of The Immacualte Heart of Mary !

Come and fill us and the whole world !

May The Church proclaim , with courage , the ways of holiness and purity, that alone empowers her children against the evil.

Where the cults of fertility worship and such , and its denial of innate God given human dignity is practiced, may the Church be able to make her children recognise the ways that satan is given a foothold - by such practices as the believers recieving The Eucharist, while in mortal sin through use of unnatural means of birth prevention and all other such forms of sinfulness !

And , one of these days , our courageous young people, as foreseen by Pope John Paul 11, will be the first ones to be in such areas of diabolical dance - as prayer warriors …to take on the enemy…to overcome good with evil…to fill the land with songs of praise and adoration…to drive out the agents of fear and hatred … with compassionate deeds …as our Lord has shown us , from The Cross !

All glory and honor be to our most Holy Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit !

And may His preciuos Blood protect us all !

Detales,

I understand your advice of looking at our religion from the outside, as well as from within.

However, in the context of this thread, as far as Deepak Chopra is concerned, my contention is his statement that I have read(I was a big fan of Deepak Chopra at one time), that gnosticism, was the only true form of Christianity, which Jesus preached. From this, Chopra shows that he doesn’t know much about the Gnostic’s and what they actually believed.

Also, as far as other virgin births, which make claims about, these are purely mythological. Joseph Campbell, made the distinction to those, and the birth of Christ, in his book, the Power of Myth.

The huge difference with Christ and them is that Jesus coming, was pre-announced. When he came, he did not have to learn a way, or find the path to happiness and truth. Rather, He himself said, “I am the way, I am the truth, I am the light, I am, the I AM.”

No other’s make this claim, nor did they have eye witnesses to his being. Most of all, they do not have the personal experience with the Divine, as Christians do with Jesus.

Such subjects are interesting, but they are nothing more than myth. Faith in Christ is beyond all that.

Apologies for the error in the above in the part of overcoming evil with good (? my own fearful , human side showing through !) ; yes , as Christians , while we are called to hate what is evil , in the form of lies and distortions , we truly wish what is best for all our brethren , of all faiths and in accordance with the will of our God , who has revealed what Love truly is !

Gratitude to Jim, in the above post , for the kindness and Christian charity .

Some of the struggles that our non Christian brethren are having , in trying to understand our faith , even help us to recognise what The Sacrament of Baptism does for us - by opening our hearts and minds to The Truth and Light .

That we, and all of creation , cultures and nations, belong to our God and Father who gives us the grace to look at others in the dignity and generosity of that Light ;

To be grateful for the meausers of goodness and truth that has been generously given by that Father, to all people of good will… to be thankful when called to share that truth , when and where needed - that His children may know how they are loved !

All praise and honor to our Most Holy Trinity !

It’s baffling to me that anybody can believe the Gospel of Thomas when John 20:27-29 says this:

27Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.

28And Thomas answered and said unto him, My LORD and my God.

29Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

The Lord puts to rest the doubts of Thomas, and it’s Thomas himself who says so. I don’t know how people could see any cracks in the meaning. I’ve read the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Judas and a fair bit of the Gnostic stuff-- they ramble on and they make no sense. Yet there always seem to be people (like Chopra and his fans) who are willing to believe everything at the same time.

I saw Chopra on PBS the other night, and I could hardly digest anyting he was saying because I was distracted by his sparkly glasses:hypno: 🤓

They weren’t sparkly glasses, which I also at first thought. I took a closer look and it was merely the reflection of the camera lights off his regular plastic framed glasses.

I enjoyed his talk, it was very informative and nothing he said, contradicts what we believe in Christianity.

As Pope Benedict said, we should accept the good things from Eastern Religions, and not reject them, just because they are Eastern.

Just out of curiosity, who was the second Jesus? He’s already on #3? 😦

I don’t know why we need to respect the fact that someone said Jesus was the son of God or that a faith was based on this idea. He either was or He wasn’t. I happen to believe He is the Son of God. I came to this belief by means of the use of intelligence, reason, and grace, all of which ultimately helped me to find truth in the teachings of the CC as well as to discern both truth and falsehood in other religions and non-canonical writings-which I’ve spent a fair amount of time looking into. But there’s a point, I believe where, as in Matthew 13:44, we sell everything we have to buy the field where the treasure’s buried.
