Hello dear friends!

I had a very vivid dream almost a year ago. I was sitting around a circle of people in a yoga studio and as I moved to the center of the circle, someone tried to put a necklace around my neck – the necklace has the thorns of Jesus’ crown on it and as I looked down at my neck, I already had 2 “Jesus necklaces” (expression I remember from my dream) and I said I didn’t need another one.

Then, I went to sit back down in my own spot I started weeping because I missed him and as I turned to my right, the Blessed Virgin Mary was kneeling right next to me and as she took me in her arms, I asked Her, “How do you deal with missing Him so much?”.

I woke up still feeling the convulsions of deep crying in my body and I remembered the textures of her robes.

I’ve never been able to decipher the meaning of that dream so I would appreciate any thoughts.

God bless you!

God be with you Angelina,

I understand your search for meaning with regards to spiritual experiences that you can’t explain. I too have had similar experiences in which I no idea as to the message they contain. Over the years I have learned that, alone, we can never ‘decipher’ the meaning. Understanding can only come when our Friend deems our souls ready to receive it. For one such experience, I had to meditate for over a decade upon the event before He granted me the gift of understanding.

Having said that, I have been granted the gift of understanding pertaining to events in my life which are similar to two of the events in your dream. Please do not take my words as having any authority. I am simply a fellow pilgrim on the path to our Lord.

First: The Crown of Thorns

Our Lord has gifted you with His sorrowful crown. As a necklace, the Crown falls over your heart. The Lord is calling you to accept the sorrowful sign of his Kingship into your heart, your very soul. What is your Crown? Every follower of our Lord endures unique pains for the sake of the Kingdom. Do people ridicule you for Christian actions? Do you stand out from the modern culture by actively living your faith in word and deed? There are other, more personal pains which can accompany the sorrowful Crown which our Lord presses to our soul. Do you willingly and regularly subject yourself to spiritual direction and formation? Do you willingly accept your faults? I know from experience that to have the true state of your soul revealed to you is wrought with pain and anguish. Do you accept who you are, faults and all, and commit yourself to forming your soul into a monstrance for our Lord to shine into the world?

The fact that our Lord gave you the Crown of Thorns as a necklace seems to me that he is calling you to endure these pains of the Kingdom in the silence of your heart. Through patience and meditation, you are being called to offer up these pains and in return, they shall become your glorious crown when you enter into our Friend’s presence.

You said that you already have two “Jesus necklaces”. That statement prompts reflection. What other two aspects of our Lord have you accepted into your heart? You also said that you do not need another one. These two devotions which already reside within your heart sustain you (whether you realize this or not). You may not understand why you need yet another devotion to our Lord, but as I said before, understanding is a gift. It will come when you are ready to receive it, even if that reception only comes when you stand before our Lord.

Second:The Sorrow of Parting and Our Lady Beside You

When we begin to experience encounters with our Lord, we always feel sorrow after our parting. Our Lady is always there to comfort us in our sorrow and is an unending wellspring of consolation. She holds us in her arms and gently whispers sweet words to calm our souls. Your question to our Lady cuts to the essence of her consolation.

While it may seem an affront to our view of her at first glance, our Lady’s answer is simple.

She does not deal with missing her son because she does not miss her son.

Her Immaculate Heart is united to the Most Sacred Heart of our Lord. She is so oriented to our Lord that He resides within the very center of her being. He is always present in her life and never leaves her side. Her sorrow was that of the suffering of her son, not of the parting. Wherever you find our Lady, you find our Lord.

The sorrow of parting we feel after Christ touches our lives is an invitation to unite ourselves to Him as His Mother did.

I have found two invaluable tools to help facilitate this union in my own life. The first is an exercise which can be done anywhere when you have a few moments. To begin, calm your mind and your body. Breathe slowly and regularly and push all thoughts and worries from your mind. While this may seem to be similar to the so-called “centering” that many new age movements propose to disassociate one’s self from reality, this exercise is, in fact, geared towards the exact opposite, the focusing of the entirety of the mind upon the very source of our existence: Christ. Imagine yourself in the place you feel most comfortable in. It could be your bedroom, a chapel, a park, any place where you feel totally safe. Next, imagine that you are sitting before Christ. Focus upon our Lord. What is he wearing? What does he look like? Can you smell anything? Simply focus upon the moment with Christ. Eventually, as you become more comfortable with the exercise and it more readily springs to mind, you can incorporate activities. Tell our Lord about your day. Go on walks with him. If you are sad, simply cry with him and allow him to comfort you. As you practice this, focus upon what you feel. This is the presence of the Lord in our life. Eventually, you will feel this presence in your daily life without needing to retreat to that inner temple in which our Lord waits. When this happens, you will understand why our Lady does not miss her son, because you will experience His companionship yourself.

The second tool to experiencing Christ’s daily presence in my life is a good deal more concrete: go to adoration if possible. There is nothing like coming before the physical presence of Christ. Even if you do not feel his physical presence immediately, with perseverance you will come to treasure the time you spend physically in the same room as our Lord. I certainly have.

Again, this is simply how I view the aspects of your dream in light of my own experience. I do not know if this is what our Lord meant when he granted you the gift of this dream. Understanding is a gift and it may be possible that the understanding which our Lord has bestowed upon me has nothing to do with what he means for you. Only you can discover this through discernment.

God Bless!

Dear Angelina,

Every dream is unique. Here is my understanding of your dream. If you view “yoga” as anti-Christian,

Faithlessness (or sinfulness) of people whom you know or the world in general, weighs heavily on you. Circle represents these people; yoga represents sins. The thorns of Jesus as necklace represent burden. You must have felt choked by the sinfulness of the world, yet your faith remains firm and your desire for Jesus is great. Your “missing” the Lord is Hope.

Inspiration from the Bible

Rev 2: 13 “I know that you live where Satan’s throne is, and yet you hold fast to my name and have not denied your faith in me, not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was martyred among you, where Satan lives.

14 Yet I have a few things against you. You have some people there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who instructed Balak to put a stumbling block before the Israelites: to eat food sacrificed to idols and to play the harlot.

Thank you so very much for taking the time to offer such a beautiful, thoughtful answer Br. Ben! I forgot to mention in the original post that she took me in her arms and I wept after I asked the question so your view on Her consolation makes great sense and feels true. I have had two other devotions of Jesus and I didn’t realize that the necklaces could symbolize them. I love Him so so much. If I didn’t have daughters, I would enter a convent.

I really appreciate the meditative exercise with Jesus – I’ve been doing a similar practice via the Ignatius of Loyola exercises and I love love them. I am going to mass tonight and when I was in adoration in front of the Eucharist last week, I really felt the presence of Jesus and I had the same weeping, longing experience.

Thanks again. I really appreciate the understanding you just brought me.

God Bless!
